The best time, in one line

Arrive for the start of the Belgian school year, which falls in late August or early September, and begin the school search the previous autumn. Everything else about a Brussels move, the home, the residence card, the commute, can be arranged around that fixed point, but the school year cannot be moved, so it is the anchor a family relocation should plan around. The 2025 to 2026 Wallonia-Brussels Federation year ran to Friday 3 July 2026 and the new year starts in late August, a rhythm set out in full in our Brussels school holidays and term dates 2026 guide.

Why the September start matters

Joining at the start of the year is easier on a child than slotting in partway through, for reasons that have little to do with admissions and everything to do with belonging. In September the whole cohort is new to the year group, friendships are still forming, and the curriculum begins from the first unit rather than mid-topic, so a new arrival is one of many finding their feet rather than the only one. The September intake is also the main one at both the European Schools, whose formal enrolment window targets it, and the private internationals, which see their largest group of joiners then. Practically, that means the widest choice of school and year group goes to families who aim for September and start early, because the popular year groups fill first. For the senior years, where continuity matters most, our shortlist of the best schools for sixth form in Brussels is a useful starting point.

When a mid-year move works

Not every move can wait for September, and Brussels handles mid-year arrivals better than many cities because its private international schools admit on a rolling basis. If your relocation lands mid-year, the natural entry points are after the Christmas break in early January or after the Carnival break in February, when a term boundary gives a clean start rather than a jump into the middle of a unit. The International School of Brussels accepts current-year applicants at most points up to around 1 May, so even a spring move is workable for the rest of that year. The European Schools, geared to the September intake, are harder to join mid-year, so a mid-year mover usually leans on the private track. Whatever the timing, confirm the year group is open before you commit, and see our Brussels admissions deadlines 2026 page for the two tracks side by side.

The relocation countdown

Working back from a late-August start, the school countdown looks like this. Nine to six months ahead, in the autumn, shortlist three or four schools and ask each whether your child's year group is open. Six to four months ahead, through the winter, visit on an open morning or a private tour, since most Brussels open days fall between January and March, as our Brussels open days 2026 page explains, and watch the European School portal from January. Four to two months ahead, in the spring, file the application with reports and a teacher reference and confirm the place. The final weeks are for the registration fee, the contract and the practicalities. Get the school side settled by early summer and the rest of the move falls into place around it; our moving to Brussels with children school guide walks through the whole sequence.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best time to move to Brussels for international schools?

Aim to arrive for the start of the Belgian school year in late August or early September, with the search beginning the previous autumn. Starting in step with the new year means your child joins when friendships form and the curriculum begins, and it aligns with the main intake at both the European Schools and the private internationals. Begin the school search six to nine months ahead.

When does the school year start in Brussels?

The Belgian school year begins in late August or early September. The Wallonia-Brussels Federation 2025 to 2026 year ran to Friday 3 July 2026, with the new year starting in late August. International schools set their own precise term start around these dates, so confirm the exact first day with your chosen school.

Can I move to Brussels mid-year for schools?

Yes, and the private international schools make it workable because they admit on a rolling basis where the year group has space. A natural mid-year entry point is after the Christmas or the Carnival break in February. The European Schools are geared to the September intake, so a mid-year place there depends on availability. Confirm the year group with the school first.

How far ahead should I plan a Brussels move for schools?

Six to nine months is realistic. That window lets you enquire and visit in the autumn and winter, file the application with reports and a teacher reference by the spring, secure a place before the summer, and arrive ready for the late-August start. Leaving it later narrows your choice, especially in popular year groups.
