The Amsterdam budget tier defined
For this list "cheapest" includes Amsterdam-area schools with annual fees below EUR 12,000 (USD ~13,000) delivering IB or strong English-medium curriculum. The headline is the DUO system, with several DUO schools at EUR 5,000-7,500. Below that we list private schools with lower-fee primary years, plus the TTO Dutch bilingual state route.
The 8 cheapest credible options
Amsterdam International Community School (AICS) - DUO primary and lower secondary
The most popular DUO international school in Amsterdam. Multiple campuses (South-East, Buitenveldert). Strong academic outcomes. Massive waitlists at every age. apply immediately on relocation confirmation. Once admitted, value is excellent.
International School Hilversum Alberdingk Thijm (DUO)
DUO school accessible from Amsterdam by commute (35-45 min by train). More accessible admissions than AICS. Strong IB Diploma. Worth applying alongside AICS to maximise chances of placement.
International School Almere (DUO)
DUO school in Almere. Easier admissions than central Amsterdam DUO schools. Strong primary and secondary. Worth considering for families willing to live in Almere or commute.
International School Haarlem (DUO)
DUO school west of Amsterdam. Modest waitlists relative to AICS. Strong sixth-form. Particularly worth considering for families based in Haarlem or willing to commute.
Optimist International School (DUO)
Newer DUO school near Schiphol. Modern facilities. Cohort outcomes still developing. Worth considering for families based near Schiphol or willing to commute. Less waitlist pressure than AICS.
Dutch TTO secondaries (state bilingual)
Dutch state secondaries with English bilingual streams. Free except for voluntary parental contribution. Strong outcomes for children comfortable with Dutch. Worth investigating particularly for families with children entering at primary age (so they have time to develop strong Dutch by secondary entry).
Lycee Vincent van Gogh (Dutch-French AEFE network)
French AEFE-network school in Amsterdam. French government partial subsidy keeps fees moderate. Open to non-French families willing to enter early. Strong French baccalaureate.
Smaller private bilinguals (lower years)
Several smaller private bilingual schools in Amsterdam offer lower-year fees within our budget tier. Quality varies. research carefully. Best for families wanting some private-tier flexibility while waiting for DUO placement.
The waitlist reality
DUO schools are dramatically oversubscribed. AICS waitlists run 1-3 years at popular ages. Strategy: apply to multiple DUO schools immediately on relocation confirmation; treat private schools as backup; reapply each year as availability shifts. See our waitlist strategies playbook.
The TTO option
Dutch state secondaries offer "tweetalig onderwijs" (TTO). bilingual streams typically with 50%+ instruction in English. Strong academic outcomes leading to Dutch VWO or HAVO diploma. For families with children entering Dutch primary at age 4-7 (allowing them to develop strong Dutch by secondary entry), TTO is the strongest value option in Amsterdam. functionally free for the academic outcome it delivers.
What you trade off
DUO IB Diploma is functionally equivalent to private IB Diploma but with leaner facilities and shorter university counselling investment. TTO leads to Dutch qualifications which travel well within Europe but require explanation to US universities. Neither is a quality compromise; both require flexibility.
