Three pathways: General, Technological, Professional

The French Baccalaureat is structured in three pathways:

Bac General: academic pathway leading to university and Grandes Ecoles. Most international French network schools deliver this pathway. Subject of this article.

Bac Technologique: technological pathway combining theoretical and applied subjects. Eight series including STMG (management), STI2D (industry), ST2S (health/social), STD2A (design/applied arts). Less common at international schools.

Bac Professionnel: vocational pathway leading directly to employment or short higher education. Largely irrelevant for international families.

The 2021 General Bac reform

Before 2021, the General Bac had three streams: S (scientific), ES (economic and social), L (literary). Students chose stream and followed prescribed subject combinations.

Since 2021, the General Bac uses "specialty subjects":

  • Common core (French, philosophy, history-geography, second language, science, PE. required for all)
  • 3 specialty subjects in Premiere (year before final), reducing to 2 specialty subjects in Terminale (final year)
  • Specialty subjects: Mathematics, Physics-Chemistry, SVT (life and earth sciences), History-Geography Geopolitics Political Science, Humanities Literature Philosophy, Languages Literatures and Cultures, SES (Economic and Social Sciences), Numerical and Computer Science, Engineering Sciences, Arts, Mathematics Expert Option, Mathematics Complementary Option

This restructuring allows students to combine subjects that would not have been possible in the old stream system (e.g., Mathematics + Humanities).

Optimal specialty combinations by university destination

Sciences/Engineering/Medicine: Mathematics + Physics-Chemistry + (SVT or Computer Science). Mathematics Expert Option recommended for top engineering Grandes Ecoles.

Economics/Business/Sciences Po: SES + Mathematics + (History-Geography Geopolitics or Languages). Sciences Po historically valued history-geography combinations.

Humanities/Languages/Law: Humanities Literature Philosophy + History-Geography + Languages Literatures or SES.

Mixed/Liberal Arts: combinations across disciplines work for liberal arts pathways.

Subject combination has substantial impact on Parcoursup university admissions in France and on international applications.

The OIB (Option Internationale du Baccalaureat). now BFI

For students at international French schools, the OIB has been replaced by BFI (Baccalaureat Francais International) since 2022. BFI delivers the standard French Bac with additional international content (typically additional subjects in second language, including history-geography in second language). BFI is delivered in approximately 1,400 schools globally including the AEFE network. BFI is well-recognised internationally and provides strong dual French-international credential.

The European Baccalaureate distinction

The European Baccalaureate (delivered at European Schools network) is a separate qualification from the French Bac. European Bac is multi-language, multi-national qualification recognised in EU member states. French Bac is the French national qualification. They are not interchangeable. students at European Schools take European Bac, not French Bac.

University recognition globally

French universities and Grandes Ecoles: French Bac is the primary entry pathway. Mention "Tres Bien" (16+/20 score) is required for many top destinations. Parcoursup is the unified admissions platform.

UK universities: French Bac is well-recognised. Russell Group typically expects 14-16/20 with relevant specialty subjects. Specific universities have specific subject requirements.

US universities: French Bac with strong scores (Mention Tres Bien) competitive for top US universities. Most US universities require additional standardised tests (SAT/ACT) alongside Bac.

Canadian, Australian, NZ universities: French Bac well-recognised with direct admission pathways.

European universities (Germany, Netherlands, Belgium): French Bac well-recognised with direct admission to most universities.

Workload comparison

French Bac workload is comparable to IB Diploma. both are demanding two-year programmes requiring substantial study across multiple subjects. French Bac has slightly less total breadth than IB (smaller core requirements) but specialty subjects can be very demanding individually. Students at French network international schools typically experience workload roughly equivalent to IB Diploma students.

Mention system

French Bac scores are awarded with Mentions:

  • Mention Bien: 14/20 or higher
  • Mention Tres Bien: 16/20 or higher
  • Mention Tres Bien with Felicitations du Jury: very high scores

Mention level matters substantially for admissions to top French Grandes Ecoles. Mention Tres Bien is typically required for Sciences Po, top engineering schools, top business schools.

The Grandes Ecoles pathway

Top French university destinations are Grandes Ecoles (Polytechnique, Centrale, ENS, HEC, ESSEC, Sciences Po, etc.) rather than universities. Grandes Ecoles entry typically requires 2 years of Classes Preparatoires aux Grandes Ecoles (CPGE) after Bac plus competitive entrance examinations (concours). For students committed to Grandes Ecoles pathway, French Bac with strong specialty preparation is the optimal foundation.

Bac vs IB Diploma. which to choose?

For French families and Francophone-bound students: French Bac (BFI for international schools) is typically optimal. Direct French/Grandes Ecoles entry, deep French-language proficiency, strong international recognition.

For globally mobile families targeting US/UK universities: IB Diploma is typically optimal. Universal recognition, balanced curriculum, strong core (TOK, EE, CAS).

For families with French-international heritage: BFI offers strong dual credential.
