Why the IB matters in Phuket

The International Baccalaureate is the dominant high stakes credential for internationally mobile families across Asia, and Phuket sits inside that mobility map even if it does not look like Bangkok or Singapore on paper. Families on the island fall into three groups. Long stay remote workers who want a portable academic record that does not commit their children to a single national university system. Asian, European and Australian families on multi year contracts who expect to move again before sixth form. And a growing cluster of self-funded retiree and lifestyle families who have chosen Phuket precisely because they want their children educated outside the British or American single pipeline. For all three groups the Diploma is the right tool, and the cohort of IB providers on the island reflects the demand.

The depth is, however, narrow. Bangkok runs a deeper IB ecosystem with more than a dozen Diploma providers, Kuala Lumpur runs a comparable depth, and Singapore runs the deepest in Southeast Asia. Phuket runs four IB programmes, of which two are mature and two are still scaling. That makes selection more important than in cities where the choice is wider. Every family on the island that wants the IB will, in practice, be choosing between the four schools on this list, and the difference between them matters at sixth form.

How we judged the programmes

We looked at six factors. Programme breadth, which captures whether the school runs the full IB continuum (Primary Years, Middle Years, Diploma) or only the Diploma at sixth form. Cohort size at Diploma, which determines whether the subject menu is rich or shallow, particularly at Higher Level. Published average Diploma score over the past three results cycles, where available. Faculty stability and IB authorisation history, which signals whether the programme is well rooted or still finding its feet. University destinations across the past three years, with weight on the recognised top tier in the home countries of the families served. Fees relative to the all-in family cost of the Diploma, which on this island sits well below the regional average and well above the local norm.

The four schools below are the only ones currently authorised by the IB Organisation to deliver any IB programme in Phuket. Several other schools talk about an IB orientation in their marketing but are not authorised; we have excluded those. Authorisation matters because only authorised schools can register candidates for the Diploma examinations and issue the final transcript that universities recognise.

The four IB schools in Phuket

1

UWC Thailand International School

IB Continuum (PYP, MYP, DP)ThalangTHB 600K to 920KAges 2 to 19

The only school in Phuket authorised to deliver the full IB continuum. UWC Thailand was the second United World College campus in Asia and is the most visible IB brand on the island. Diploma cohort runs at around 60 to 70 students per year, with a mature subject menu including six Higher Level groups, Theatre, Visual Arts and Environmental Systems. Average Diploma score sits between 35 and 36 across recent years, above the global 30 to 31 average. Outdoor learning, sustainability and service are integrated through the programme. Located in Thalang on the central island corridor, with strong Bang Tao and Cherngtalay catchment. Most leavers go to UK, Australian, US and Canadian universities; UWC graduates are well represented at NYU Abu Dhabi, Yale-NUS legacy programmes and the Russell Group.

2

British International School Phuket (BISP)

IB Diploma + A-LevelKoh KaewTHB 560K to 880KAges 3 to 18

The largest international school on the island and the only one to run the IB Diploma alongside a full British A-Level pathway. Around 30 to 40 students per year select the Diploma, with the remainder taking A-Levels. Diploma average sits in the 33 to 35 range. Subject menu is reasonable at Higher Level but narrower than UWC Thailand because the school splits its sixth form cohort across the two systems. The dual pathway is the BISP positioning play: families who arrive uncertain whether their child will end up in a UK or wider international system can defer the decision until Year 12. Located in Koh Kaew with a long-running boarding programme that draws students from across Asia.

3

HeadStart International School Phuket

IB Diploma + CambridgeChalongTHB 460K to 580KAges 2 to 18

Authorised for the Diploma since 2019, with a small but growing cohort at sixth form. HeadStart is the most affordable IB school in Phuket at around THB 580,000 a year for the Diploma. Cohort sits at around 15 to 20 candidates a year, which limits the Higher Level subject menu but allows for tight teacher to student ratios. Cambridge IGCSE remains the dominant Year 11 qualification and most students choose between IB and A-Level at the transition to Year 12. Suits families in the Chalong and Rawai catchment who want IB at a budget envelope materially below BISP and UWC Thailand.

4

Oakridge International School Phuket

IB Diploma + BritishChalongTHB 480K to 600KAges 2 to 18

The newest IB provider on the island, with the Diploma authorised in 2022 and a first full cohort graduating in 2024. Oakridge runs a smaller Diploma cohort of around 10 to 15 candidates a year alongside its British A-Level provision. The subject menu is the narrowest of the four schools and the published outcomes data is still thin given the youth of the programme. Suits families seeking a smaller, family-feel campus at the lower end of the fee envelope, with the understanding that the Diploma cohort is still finding its scale.

Compare these four schools side by side

The decision between the four IB schools turns on cohort size, subject menu, fees and location. Open the compare tool to set the four programmes alongside each other on the metrics that matter, or filter Phuket schools by curriculum and fee envelope through the school finder. For families weighing IB against A-Level, the IB curriculum page sets out the broader case for the Diploma.

Fees at IB Diploma level

Phuket IB Diploma fees range from THB 580,000 a year at HeadStart to THB 920,000 at UWC Thailand, which is roughly half the equivalent fee at the comparable Bangkok IB schools (NIST International School, ISB International School Bangkok) and a third of the fees at the top tier Singapore IB schools. The full picture, however, sits in the loading on top of tuition. Capital levies at the IB schools run from THB 90,000 at HeadStart and Oakridge to THB 250,000 at UWC Thailand and BISP. Exam fees at the Diploma sit at THB 45,000 to THB 65,000 per candidate, paid in Year 13. Books, technology and consumables add THB 20,000 to THB 40,000 a year. Trips, particularly the UWC service expeditions, can add THB 30,000 to THB 80,000 a year for sixth form.

The all-in family number at the top of the market is therefore around THB 1.15 million a year per child for the Diploma at UWC Thailand or BISP. At HeadStart and Oakridge the all-in number lands at THB 700,000 to THB 750,000. What sixth form outcomes look like

UWC Thailand has published average Diploma scores in the 35.0 to 36.5 range across the past five graduating cohorts. That puts the school above the global average of 30 to 31 points but slightly below the strongest IB schools in Bangkok and Singapore, which sit in the 37 to 39 range. The school has consistently sent students to UK Russell Group universities, the leading Australian Group of Eight institutions, top tier US liberal arts colleges and a strong Canadian destination set. The UWC scholarship network also delivers a small but consistent flow of selective offers, particularly to NYU Abu Dhabi, the Atlantic College pathway and the wider UWC alumni network.

BISP has produced Diploma averages of 33 to 35 in recent years from a cohort split between IB and A-Level. The school's destinations skew more heavily towards UK universities than UWC Thailand, with consistent acceptances at Russell Group institutions and a smaller but visible flow to leading European and US universities. The dual pathway means that some of the strongest academic students at BISP take A-Levels rather than the IB, which can flatten the Diploma average relative to a school where every academic student is funnelled into a single pathway. HeadStart and Oakridge run smaller cohorts that have produced credible 32 to 34 averages but with thinner data given the youth of the programmes.

Choosing the right IB school for your child

The most useful frame is to start with cohort size at sixth form and work outward from there. Families that want a deep subject menu at Higher Level, particularly in the arts, sciences and humanities, will find that UWC Thailand and BISP carry the depth that HeadStart and Oakridge cannot match. Families that want a smaller, more pastoral environment and are comfortable with a narrower subject menu will find HeadStart and Oakridge a better fit, particularly when the budget envelope is the binding constraint. Geography matters more than it does in larger cities; the daily commute between Cherngtalay, Bang Tao, Koh Kaew and the southern Rawai and Chalong corridors can exceed an hour at peak times, and the right school is often the one that is also the right location.

A practical recommendation: visit at least three of the four schools and sit in on a Year 12 class at each. Ask explicitly for the past three years of Diploma averages, the current Year 12 cohort size, the Higher Level subject menu and the recent university destinations list. Schools that share these openly are usually a better bet than those that hesitate. Frequently asked questions

How many IB schools are there in Phuket?

Four schools currently run an International Baccalaureate programme in Phuket: UWC Thailand, British International School Phuket, HeadStart International School and Oakridge International School. UWC Thailand offers the full IB continuum from primary through to Diploma, the others run the IB Diploma at sixth form alongside other curricula.

How much does the IB Diploma cost in Phuket?

IB Diploma tuition in Phuket ranges from THB 580,000 a year at HeadStart and Oakridge to THB 920,000 at UWC Thailand and BISP. Add about 20 to 25 percent for capital levies, exam fees, books and trips for the realistic all-in family number per year.

Which IB school in Phuket has the best results?

UWC Thailand has produced the strongest published Diploma averages on the island in recent years, sitting in the 35 to 36 range, with BISP close behind at 33 to 35. HeadStart and Oakridge run smaller cohorts that have performed credibly but with thinner published data.

Is IB or A-Level better in Phuket?

Both BISP and HeadStart offer the choice between IB Diploma and A-Level at sixth form, and the right answer depends on the child. The Diploma is broader and well suited to internationally mobile students. A-Level offers more depth in three or four subjects and suits students with a clear academic specialism. Families who are uncertain often find BISP attractive because the choice can be deferred to Year 12.

Are there primary-level IB schools in Phuket?

UWC Thailand is the only school in Phuket that runs the IB Primary Years Programme. The other three IB schools begin their IB authorisation at sixth form only, although BISP and HeadStart run IB-aligned approaches in middle school without formal MYP authorisation.
