The Munich fee landscape
Munich hosts a tighter international school market than Berlin. fewer schools but with strong concentration of premium options. Bavarian International School (BIS), Munich International School (MIS), Phorms Munich and several smaller bilingual schools serve the expat community. Bavaria's state schools (Gymnasium track leading to Abitur) deliver consistently strong outcomes for families committed to German-language education.

The hidden extras
Total cost-of-place adds 10-15% to private fees. Largest line items: Aufnahmegebuhr (registration. EUR 1,000-2,500 one-time), school bus where offered (EUR 2,500-4,500. important given Munich's catchment spread), Mensa/lunch (EUR 1,500-2,500), uniform rare in Munich (EUR 0-400), trips and ski weeks (EUR 1,500-3,500. typical for Bavaria), exam entries (EUR 700-1,400 in IGCSE/IB years), books and materials (EUR 200-500).
The Bavarian state advantage
Bavaria's Gymnasium system is consistently among the most academically demanding in Germany. Outcomes leading to the Bavarian Abitur are highly portable internationally. Free to all residents (including non-German residents with valid permits). For families with longer Munich time horizons (4+ years) and willingness to develop strong German in their children, Bavarian state Gymnasium is genuinely competitive with international school education and substantially cheaper.
Year-on-year fee inflation
Munich private school fees rose 4.0% on average across 2025-26, near German CPI. Premium schools tracked 4.0-4.5%. Bavarian state schools have no fee inflation (state schools).
Munich vs. Berlin
Munich premium fees sit close to Berlin's premium tier. Munich's distinctive feature is the absence of a SESB-equivalent state bilingual system. Berlin's SESB delivers state-bilingual education that Munich does not match. For bilingual-committed expat families, Berlin offers a stronger value option. For families willing to commit fully to German-language Bavarian state Gymnasium, Munich is excellent value.
Sibling discounts
Most Munich private schools offer 5-10% sibling discounts. Bavarian state schools have no discounts (already nominal fees). See our sibling discount table.
