The Shanghai fee landscape
Shanghai hosts one of the world's deepest international school markets, with 30+ premium schools and 60+ bilingual Chinese internationals. Premium schools (Shanghai American School, BISS, Dulwich Shanghai, YCIS Shanghai, Wellington College Shanghai, Concordia, Western International School) sit at RMB 280,000-360,000 per year. Mid-tier at RMB 180,000-280,000. Bilingual privates at RMB 130,000-220,000.
Critical regulatory point: Chinese passport-holders are generally restricted from attending pure international schools (those serving foreign passport holders). they must attend bilingual Chinese internationals or Chinese state schools. This is enforced strictly. Foreign passport holders have full access to international schools.

The post-pandemic context
Shanghai's international school cohort fell roughly 25-35% during 2020-2023 as expat families departed. Recovery began in 2024. Some premium schools still operate below pre-pandemic capacity; others have rebuilt. Waitlist pressure varies widely by school. Shanghai vs. Beijing vs. Hong Kong

Some Shanghai schools offer 5-10% sibling discounts; SAS and several premium schools offer none. Bilingual Chinese internationals more commonly offer sibling discounts. See our sibling discount table.
Currency exposure
RMB is managed against a basket of currencies but moves modestly versus USD. USD and EUR-paid families have moderate currency risk. Premium schools sometimes accept USD payment at preferred rates for foreign passport holders.
