Indonesia public holidays 2026
Every school in Jakarta closes on Indonesia's national public holidays, set by joint ministerial decree in September 2025. The headline 2026 dates are below; Islamic dates depend on the lunar calendar.
| Holiday | Date(s) 2026 |
|---|---|
| New Year's Day | Thursday 1 January |
| Chinese New Year (Imlek) | Tuesday 17 February |
| Nyepi (Saka New Year) | Thursday 19 March |
| Idul Fitri | Saturday 21 March to Sunday 22 March (plus collective leave) |
| Good Friday | Friday 3 April |
| Labour Day | Friday 1 May |
| Ascension Day | Thursday 14 May |
| Idul Adha | Wednesday 27 May |
| Waisak (Vesak) | Sunday 31 May |
| Pancasila Day | Monday 1 June |
| Independence Day | Monday 17 August |
| Christmas Day | Friday 25 December |
Indonesia also designates eight collective leave days (cuti bersama) around the major holidays, especially Idul Fitri, which extends the practical break well beyond the headline dates. Islamic New Year and the Prophet's Birthday fall in mid June and late August respectively. Confirm your school's treatment of cuti bersama days, as private and international schools handle them differently.
DKI Jakarta term dates 2025 to 2026 and 2026 to 2027
Local schools follow the DKI Jakarta provincial education calendar, a two-semester year. The confirmed 2025-26 shape is below; individual schools may start a few days earlier or later.
| Period | Dates |
|---|---|
| Semester 1 | Mon 14 July 2025 to Fri 19 December 2025 |
| Semester break | Late December 2025 to early January 2026 |
| Semester 2 | Mon 5 January 2026 to Fri 19 June 2026 |
| Ramadan and Idul Fitri break | Around 18 February to late March 2026 (indicative) |
| Mid-year holiday | Late June to mid July 2026 |
| 2026-27 school year starts | Mid July 2026 (indicative) |
Unlike northern-hemisphere systems, Indonesia's long break sits in late June and July between two school years rather than as a summer holiday. The detailed 2026-27 dates were not yet published at the time of writing, so the mid-July start is indicative and follows the established pattern. Indonesia's national framework is set out in our Indonesia country guide.
Choosing a school in Jakarta?
Local and international schools in Jakarta keep very different calendars and fee structures. Our school finder filters Jakarta schools by curriculum and fee tier.
International school term dates
Most expat families in Jakarta choose international schools, which do not follow the DKI Jakarta semester calendar. The dominant patterns are:
- British and IB schools (British School Jakarta, Jakarta Intercultural School, ACG and others) run a northern-hemisphere year from mid August to mid June, with October and spring breaks.
- American schools work a two-semester model from mid August to mid June, with a fall break and a winter break aligned to Christmas.
- All international schools observe Idul Fitri, Independence Day and the other national holidays, so these dates close every school in the city.
The defining difference is the summer. International schools take a full ten-week summer from mid June to late August, while local schools take a much shorter mid-year break and run their main break around Ramadan instead. For the curriculum landscape behind these calendars, see our curriculum guides.
Planning the year
Three practical notes for Jakarta. First, the Idul Fitri period in late March triggers mudik, the mass homeward migration, when domestic flights and roads are at their busiest; plan any regional travel well ahead or stay put while the city quietens. Second, international school fees are billed by term or semester, so the mid-August restart is when the larger invoice falls; our international school fees in Jakarta guide covers the tiers and timing. Third, the long international-school summer aligns with the northern-hemisphere holidays, which makes home-country visits straightforward but pushes peak airfares. IB and A-level exams run through May, overlapping Idul Adha and Waisak, so confirm any clash before booking.
