Swedish public holidays 2026

Every Stockholm school closes on Sweden's national public holidays. The Easter and Ascension dates move each year; the rest are fixed.

HolidayDate 2026
New Year's DayThursday 1 January
EpiphanyTuesday 6 January
Good FridayFriday 3 April
Easter MondayMonday 6 April
May DayFriday 1 May
Ascension DayThursday 14 May
National DaySaturday 6 June
Midsummer Eve and DayFriday 19 and Saturday 20 June
Christmas Eve, Day and Boxing DayThursday 24 to Saturday 26 December

Midsummer, with its Eve on Friday 19 June 2026, is the high point of the Swedish summer and falls a week or so after the school year ends, so it rarely touches the calendar but empties the city. The run of May holidays around Ascension creates the klamdag bridging days that many families take.

Stockholm term dates 2025-26 and 2026-27

Stockholms stad publishes the term dates for its municipal compulsory schools (grundskola), with the same breaks across all of them. The 2025-26 year runs from mid August with an autumn break, the February sports holiday and an Easter break. The headline dates are below.

PeriodDates
First school dayTue 19 August 2025
Autumn holiday (hostlov, week 44)Mon 27 to Fri 31 October 2025
Christmas holiday (jullov)Mon 22 December 2025 to Tue 6 January 2026
Sports holiday (sportlov, week 9)Mon 23 to Fri 27 February 2026
Easter holiday (pasklov)Tue 7 to Fri 10 April 2026
Last school dayThu 11 June 2026

The February sports holiday in week 9 is the distinctive Swedish break and the peak ski week, with families heading north or to the Alps. Note that the Easter holiday starts on the Tuesday after Easter Monday, because Easter Monday itself is a public holiday. The 2026-27 calendar was not confirmed in full at the time of writing; expect the autumn term to open in the second half of August 2026 with the autumn break around week 44, but treat any 2026-27 figure as indicative until Stockholms stad publishes it.

International school term dates

Stockholm's international schools, including the Stockholm International School, the British International School of Stockholm and the international streams at several independent schools, set their own term dates aligned to their home curriculum rather than the city calendar. British-pattern schools run three terms with two half terms, the IB schools follow a close variant, and a couple of American-pattern programmes use two semesters.

The closest overlap with the municipal calendar is the February sports holiday, which international schools keep broadly in line with the Swedish week 9 so that families across both systems share the main ski break. The biggest divergence is at Christmas, where international schools usually take a fuller two-week break, and the summer, which can run a little longer at the front. All of them still close on the Swedish national public holidays in the table above. To weigh the different programmes read the curriculum guide.

Planning the year

Three practical notes for Stockholm families. First, the February sports holiday in week 9 is the date to lock in early, because demand for ski cabins and northern travel peaks that week and prices climb fast. Second, the autumn break in week 44 is a quieter, cheaper travel window and a good time for a city break south. Third, Midsummer falls just after the school year ends, so it is the natural start of the family summer rather than a mid-term interruption; plan the long break around it. For the cost of living, residence and visa context behind a move read the Sweden country guide, and to compare districts and schools return to the Stockholm city guide.
