Term dates for Taipei's state schools are set within the national framework by the Ministry of Education and the Taipei City Department of Education, while international schools layer their own calendar on top. Our Taipei city guide covers the sector; this page sets out the 2026 dates. The two fixed long breaks are the Lunar New Year winter holiday and the summer holiday.
Taipei public holidays 2026
Taipei schools close on Taiwan national public holidays. Several are tied to the lunar calendar and shift each year; the confirmed 2026 dates announced by the government are below.
| Holiday | Date(s) 2026 |
|---|---|
| New Year's Day | Thursday 1 January |
| Lunar New Year holiday | Saturday 14 to Sunday 22 February |
| Peace Memorial Day | Friday 27 February to Sunday 1 March |
| Tomb Sweeping (Qingming) Festival | Friday 3 to Monday 6 April |
| Labour Day | Friday 1 to Sunday 3 May |
| Dragon Boat Festival | Friday 19 to Sunday 21 June |
| Mid-Autumn Festival and Teachers Day | Friday 25 to Monday 28 September |
| Double Ten National Day | Friday 9 to Sunday 11 October |
| Retrocession Day | Saturday 24 to Monday 26 October |
| Constitution Day | Friday 25 to Sunday 27 December |
Taiwan groups several of these into long weekends by shifting working Saturdays, so the practical days off can extend beyond the headline dates. The nine-day Lunar New Year break is the largest of the year and dominates the winter school holiday.
Term dates 2025-26 and 2026-27
The table shows the typical Taipei state-school shape. The Taiwan year runs in two semesters: the first from early September to mid or late January, then the winter holiday around the Lunar New Year, the second from mid-February to late June, then the summer holiday.
| Period (Taipei state schools) | Dates |
|---|---|
| First semester | early September 2025 to around late January 2026 |
| Winter holiday | around late January to mid-February 2026 (continuous around Lunar New Year 14 to 22 February) |
| Second semester | mid-February to late June 2026 |
| Summer holiday | early July to end of August 2026 |
| 2026-27 year begins | early September 2026 |
These are typical Taipei dates within the national framework; each school confirms its own exact start and end days, and the winter holiday length flexes with the Lunar New Year date. The semester and winter dates above are indicative and should be confirmed against your school's published calendar before booking travel.
Building your Taipei school shortlist?
Taipei has a compact but strong international sector, including British, American and IB schools, alongside Taiwanese and bilingual schools. Our school finder filters by curriculum and fee tier.
International school term dates
Taipei's international schools follow a northern-hemisphere August or September to June year, which broadly aligns with the Taiwan state calendar's September start but diverges in the detail. Most international schools take a two-week Christmas break in late December that Taiwanese state schools do not, then a separate week off for the Lunar New Year in February. British international schools keep three terms with an October half-term; IB and American schools run two semesters with the IB Diploma exam season in May, and the summer break falls across July and August. The shared anchor with the local calendar is the Lunar New Year closure. If curriculum is still open, our curriculum guide explains how each system shapes the year and its assessment seasons.
Planning the year
Two practical notes for Taipei families. First, the Lunar New Year is the single busiest travel period in the region, with flights and high-speed rail booked out weeks ahead, so lock in the February window early. Second, the long summer overlaps Taiwan's typhoon season, which can disrupt late-summer travel, so build flexibility into August plans.
