The Auckland school year in 2026
Auckland schools run the New Zealand four-term year, which is the reverse of the northern hemisphere: the year opens in late January or early February 2026 and closes in mid December, with the long summer holiday falling over Christmas and January rather than mid-year. The Ministry of Education fixes Terms 2 and 3 nationally and gives schools a window to set their own Term 1 start and Term 4 finish, so dates vary by a few days between Auckland schools. For the wider picture of schools and stages, see our international schools in Auckland directory, and for the detailed term and holiday tables our full Auckland school holidays 2026 calendar.
| Term 2026 | Dates |
|---|---|
| Term 1 | Starts between Monday 26 January and Monday 9 February, ends Thursday 2 April |
| Term 2 | Monday 20 April to Friday 3 July (fixed) |
| Term 3 | Monday 20 July to Friday 25 September (fixed) |
| Term 4 | Monday 12 October to no later than Friday 18 December |
Most Auckland schools open in the first week of February, after Auckland Anniversary Day and Waitangi Day, and take two-week breaks between terms. Because the Term 1 start and Term 4 finish sit within Ministry windows, always confirm the exact first and last day on your own school's calendar before booking travel.
Public holidays that close every school
Whichever curriculum a school follows, New Zealand's public holidays close every Auckland school. The dates that matter most for families in 2026 are below, and several of them usefully fall inside the term breaks this year.
| Holiday | Date 2026 |
|---|---|
| Auckland Anniversary Day | Monday 26 January |
| Waitangi Day | Friday 6 February |
| Good Friday | Friday 3 April |
| Easter Monday | Monday 6 April |
| Anzac Day (observed) | Monday 27 April |
| King's Birthday | Monday 1 June |
| Matariki | Friday 10 July |
| Labour Day | Monday 26 October |
| Christmas Day & Boxing Day | Friday 25 & Saturday 26 December |
In 2026 the Easter and Anzac holidays land in the Term 1 break, Matariki on Friday 10 July falls inside the Term 2 to Term 3 holidays, and Auckland Anniversary Day lands just before many schools open Term 1, so several public holidays do not extend term time. King's Birthday on Monday 1 June and Labour Day on Monday 26 October fall during term and create long weekends.
How Cambridge and IB schools differ
Auckland schools that teach Cambridge International or the IB Diploma keep the same four-term New Zealand calendar but sit their senior examinations on the international timetable, later in the year than the northern hemisphere. Cambridge series and IB Diploma examinations run in the second half of the year, overlapping Term 4, so senior families should check the exact examination weeks before planning travel. A few independent schools begin Term 1 a little later and finish Term 4 a little earlier than the state sector, all within the Ministry windows. To understand which programme suits your child, see our IB curriculum guide and the Auckland secondary schools overview.

Use the school finderPlanning the 2026 year
Three practical points for families planning the Auckland school year. First, the long summer break over Christmas and January is peak holiday season across New Zealand, so domestic flights and accommodation are dearest then; the cooler term breaks in April, July and October are better value windows for travel. Second, school fees are usually billed by term, and the February restart is when the first invoice of the year falls; our guide to international school fees in Auckland covers the tiers and timing. Third, if you are relocating mid-year, the Term 2 and Term 3 starts in April and July are common entry points, and many Auckland schools assess and enrol on a rolling basis rather than only in February. Families with younger children can also see stage-specific timing in our Auckland primary schools guide.
