How many international primary schools in Bahrain
Bahrain has around 22 schools delivering an international primary programme from Year 1 to Year 6 in 2026. The market splits into nine British primary providers, four American primary providers, three IB Primary Years Programme providers, two bilingual Arabic-English primaries and a handful of community-language primaries (Indian CBSE, Pakistani Federal Board, Filipino DepEd) serving their respective expatriate communities. The Western international segment is dominated by St Christopher's Saar, British School of Bahrain Hamala, Riffa Views International School and Bahrain School Elementary.
Cohort sizes are smaller than the Gulf average. The largest single Year 1 intake in Bahrain is at St Christopher's School Saar with around 70 children across three form-entry classes. British School of Bahrain runs a similar 65 to 70 Year 1 children at Hamala. Most other British primaries take a single-form or two-form entry, between 22 and 44 children per year group. The American primaries at Riffa Views, Bahrain School Elementary and the American School of Bahrain run smaller Grade 1 cohorts of 18 to 30 children, in keeping with the smaller US Navy and Western corporate community served by these schools.
The Bahrain primary market has a strong feeder dynamic that families need to plan for. St Christopher's Saar feeds the St Christopher's Sixth Form through to A Level. BSB Hamala feeds the BSB sixth form. RVIS feeds the IB Diploma in the same building. Bahrain School Elementary, run by the US Department of Defense Education Activity, feeds the Bahrain School High School through to the US High School Diploma. These vertical pipelines mean the primary school choice effectively locks in the secondary and sixth form options for most families until at least Year 9. The exception is families using community-language primaries, who typically transition to the Western international stream at Year 7.
Fees and the curriculum mix
Primary tuition in Bahrain groups into four rough tiers. The Asian-community primaries (Indian School Bahrain, Pakistani School and similar) run from BHD 1,400 to BHD 2,800 a year for Years 1 to 6. The mid-tier Western primaries including Bahrain Bayan School, Modern Knowledge Schools and Ibn Khuldoon National School run BHD 3,200 to BHD 4,500 a year. The premium Western primaries including BSB Hamala, RVIS and the American School of Bahrain sit between BHD 4,800 and BHD 5,800 a year. The top tier is St Christopher's Saar at BHD 5,800 to BHD 6,800 a year for Years 1 to 6.
The curriculum choice at primary matters less than at secondary, because most international primaries converge on a broadly similar mix of literacy, numeracy, science, humanities, French or Arabic as a second language, art, music, PE and ICT. Where it does matter is in the assessment culture: British primaries use end-of-key-stage SATs at Year 2 and Year 6, IB PYP schools use the PYP exhibition at Year 6, and American primaries use MAP testing three times a year from Grade 2. Where primary families live
Bahrain primary families cluster around four main residential corridors. Saar and Janabiya in the north-west host the largest concentration of Western expatriate families using St Christopher's Primary, with villa compounds along the Saar service road and the Janabiya Highway. Hamala and Budaiya in the central west serve BSB Primary families, with newer mid-rise villa developments. Riffa Views in the south-west is a self-contained gated estate built around RVIS, with most primary families living within a 5 to 10 minute internal drive of the school. Juffair and Hidd to the east host most US Navy families using Bahrain School Elementary, with high-rise apartment living dominating the housing stock.
Primary school commutes in Bahrain are short by Gulf standards because the country is small (the longest possible school commute is around 40 minutes). Most Saar families reach St Christopher's in 10 to 15 minutes. Hamala BSB families have a similar 10 to 15 minute drive. Riffa Views families typically have a 5 minute internal drive within the gated estate. The eastern Juffair corridor is the exception, with most US Navy families running a 15 to 25 minute commute to Bahrain School Elementary or the bus loop. Admissions: Year 1 and mid-primary entry
The Bahrain school year runs September to June following the Ministry of Education calendar. Applications for the September 2026 academic year opened at most primary schools between September and November 2025. Year 1 (age 5) is the most competitive entry point at the major British schools because it locks in the place through to Year 6 and beyond. St Christopher's and BSB typically close Year 1 applications by mid-January with assessment days through February and offers in March. Deposits to secure the place are due within ten working days of the offer.
Mid-primary entry (Years 2 to 6) is usually possible where capacity exists, though St Christopher's and BSB rarely have movement at Year 2 because the Year 1 cohort tends to roll forward intact. Year 3, Year 4 and Year 5 typically have 4 to 8 places available per year group across the major primaries, with rolling admissions through to the end of February for the following September. The Bahrain Ministry of Education requires a transfer certificate from the previous school plus passport and CPR copies for entry. The administrative paperwork takes 2 to 4 weeks in addition to the school's own admissions assessment, which usually consists of a one-day visit and an age-appropriate literacy and numeracy task.
