How many German schools in Beijing

Beijing has one school offering a full German national curriculum, the Deutsche Botschaftsschule Peking, abbreviated DSP and known locally as the German Embassy School Beijing. DSP is part of the global network of German schools abroad supported by the Federal Republic and the Standing Conference of Education Ministers, the KMK. Because the cluster has only one provider, this page is a guide for families rather than a ranking.

DSP operates from a purpose-built campus in Shunyi District. Total enrolment is small relative to other Beijing international schools, typically around 350 pupils across kindergarten through Klasse 12. Class sizes are correspondingly small, with single-form entry common in the lower years and class sizes of 12 to 20 in the upper grades. The school holds Auslandsschule Excellence status from the German government.

A handful of Beijing bilingual schools offer German as a foreign language and some Chinese national schools maintain German departments through DAAD partnerships, but families seeking the German national programme, the Abitur and onward access to German universities should treat DSP as the practical choice. There is no mainstream alternative for the full German pathway in the city.

Fees and tiers

German Embassy School fees follow the Auslandsschule pricing model rather than the open market rates of Beijing's American and IB schools. Annual tuition at DSP ranges from approximately EUR 13,000 in kindergarten to EUR 22,000 in the upper Abitur years, payable in RMB equivalent. A one-off registration fee of around EUR 1,200 applies. There is no capital contribution.

Families on German federal civil service contracts and on accredited German company packages often receive partial or full fee reimbursement; this is worth raising with HR before signing a Beijing assignment. German citizens may qualify for the Auslandszuschlag teacher cost subsidy which is reflected in the published fee schedule. Lunch, transport, examination fees and trips add 8 to 12 percent. See our Beijing fees guide for cross-cluster context.

The Abitur pathway

DSP delivers the full German Gymnasium pathway from Klasse 5 through Klasse 12, ending with the German Abitur. The Abitur is examined under KMK standards with examination papers set centrally in Germany, giving the qualification full recognition for German university Numerus Clausus applications and across the European Higher Education Area. Pre-Abitur years follow the standard German Gymnasium structure with Pflichtfacher and Wahlfacher.

Most graduates progress directly to German university through Hochschulstart, with smaller groups entering Austrian, Swiss and Dutch universities. A growing minority apply to UK universities through UCAS and to North American institutions through Common App. The German curriculum guide covers Abitur subject combinations and recognition by university systems worldwide.

Illustrative example school

Deutsche Botschaftsschule Peking (Shunyi). The single full German curriculum school in Beijing, on a purpose-built Shunyi campus. Around 350 pupils across kindergarten through Klasse 12, fully KMK accredited with Auslandsschule Excellence status. Small class sizes, strong Abitur results and direct pathway to German university through Hochschulstart. The school has a tight community of German federal, corporate and family business families on Beijing assignment.

Where German families live

German families in Beijing predominantly live in Shunyi District, the same residential belt as DSP. Capital Paradise, Beijing Riviera and Quanfa are the most common compounds. Bus commute times to the DSP campus are 10 to 20 minutes from these estates. Many German federal contract families share housing complexes with French, Dutch and Northern European families on similar packages.

A smaller but visible German community lives in the Liangmaqiao and Sanlitun corridor closer to the central business district, where the Goethe Institut, the German embassy, several German cultural venues and a number of German corporate offices are based. This is the right area for shorter commutes to embassy and corporate offices, with school bus links available to Shunyi for DSP pupils.

Outside Beijing proper, a few German families with senior plant management roles live closer to industrial parks in Tianjin or in the Beijing economic and technological development area, occasionally commuting children weekly to DSP boarding hosts. This is uncommon and works only for older pupils. Most families plan housing first around the Shunyi campus, then optimise for spouse commute as a secondary priority.

Admissions calendar

DSP runs the German academic year. The main intake is the start of August with the school year ending in mid-July. Applications for the main intake open in October of the previous year with priority deadlines in February. Mid-year transfers are accepted where places exist. The kindergarten and lower Klasse years are most over-subscribed and require the longest lead time.

Upper Klasse transfers, especially into Klasse 10 and Klasse 11, are typically open for transferring families from other German Auslandsschulen and from German domestic Gymnasien. Abitur year transfers, into Klasse 12, are usually declined because central examination preparation is already underway. Apply at least six months ahead if you can; the school is small and competition for the popular year groups is real.

Frequently asked questions

How many German curriculum schools are in Beijing?

Beijing has one mainstream German national curriculum school, the Deutsche Botschaftsschule Peking, abbreviated DSP. The school is fully KMK accredited and holds Auslandsschule Excellence status. A handful of Beijing bilingual schools offer German as a foreign language but none deliver the full German national programme leading to the Abitur.

How much does the German Embassy School in Beijing cost?

Annual tuition ranges from approximately EUR 13,000 in kindergarten to EUR 22,000 in the upper Abitur years, payable in RMB equivalent. A one-off registration fee of around EUR 1,200 applies. There is no capital contribution. Some German federal civil service contracts and German company packages cover fees in full.

Can non-German families enrol at the DSP Beijing?

Yes. DSP accepts pupils of any nationality, though instruction is in German and the curriculum follows KMK standards. Children without prior German exposure are typically supported through dedicated language entry programmes in the lower years. Older entrants without strong German typically struggle in the Gymnasium upper school.

Does the German Abitur work for non-German universities?

Yes. The German Abitur is recognised by UK universities through UCAS, by US universities through Common App, and across the European Higher Education Area. The qualification is the standard route to German university through Hochschulstart and to Austrian, Swiss and Dutch universities, with growing acceptance in selective UK and US institutions.

When do DSP applications open in Beijing?

The main August intake opens for applications in October of the previous year with priority deadlines in February. Mid-year applications are accepted where places exist, with most movement in upper Klasse years rather than the popular kindergarten and lower years. Apply at least six months ahead given the small cohort size.

Is Mandarin taught at the DSP Beijing?

Yes. Mandarin is part of the curriculum from the lower Klasse years and continues through the upper years. Several pupils select Mandarin as one of their Abitur examination subjects. The school's Shunyi location provides daily Mandarin exposure through extracurricular and community activities outside formal lessons.
