How many IB schools in Brussels
The Brussels metropolitan area, defined here as the Brussels Capital Region plus the southern Brabant Wallon communes around Waterloo and Lasne, currently lists around 12 authorised IB World Schools. Roughly nine deliver the full IB Diploma at sixth form. The remainder offer the Primary Years or Middle Years Programme only, with students transitioning to another Brussels secondary at fourteen or sixteen. The headline cluster is anchored by the International School of Brussels at Watermael-Boitsfort, BEPS International School across its Ixelles and Limal sites, and St John's International School at Waterloo, all of which run all three IB programmes.
Demand in Brussels is driven by four overlapping family pools. EU institution families form the largest single group, working at the European Commission, the European Parliament, the European External Action Service and the various agencies. NATO families, both military and civilian, sit alongside. Diplomatic missions to the EU, NATO and Belgium together represent the third group. Multinational corporate families, working for Solvay, UCB, Proximus and the consultancies, make up the fourth. The European Schools, run by the EU institutions and teaching the European Baccalaureate, operate in parallel and absorb a significant share of EU staff demand, which keeps the private IB cluster smaller than Geneva or Singapore. For wider routing see our Brussels city hub and the EU families guide.
Fees and the Brussels tiers
Brussels IB tuition splits into three bands. The entry tier, EUR 18,000 to EUR 22,000 a year, captures the smaller settings, including the lower years at BEPS Ixelles and several PYP-only schools. The mid private tier, EUR 23,000 to EUR 28,000, covers the middle years and lower senior phase at the main IB providers. The premium tier, EUR 30,000 to EUR 36,000 a year, holds the senior phase at International School of Brussels, St John's at Waterloo and BEPS Limal. Capital fees of EUR 3,000 to EUR 8,000 apply at first registration and are usually non-refundable.
The European Schools are a different proposition. Places are tied to EU institution employment status and tuition is subsidised, often free for Category I families. Annual costs for Category II and III, the open market route, run around EUR 5,000 to EUR 10,000 a year. The waiting lists at the four Brussels European Schools, Uccle, Woluwe, Ixelles and Laeken, are however long for non-institution families and most external applicants choose the private IB route instead. Our Brussels fees guide covers the all-in arithmetic, and the fees explorer lets you compare across cities.

Illustrative example schools
The schools below are illustrative, not a ranking. Each holds full IB authorisation, a track record stretching back at least twenty years, and a distinct place in the Brussels market.
International School of Brussels in Watermael-Boitsfort is the city's largest IB World School, with a sprawling 16 hectare campus on the edge of the Forêt de Soignes. It runs PYP, MYP and the Diploma alongside a US-pattern American high school programme, and most senior cohorts average above 34 IB points.
BEPS International School operates two sites, a smaller PYP campus at Ixelles in the centre of Brussels and a larger MYP and Diploma campus at Limal in Brabant Wallon. The Ixelles site suits EU institution families based in the centre, while Limal serves the Waterloo and Lasne commuter belt.
St John's International School at Waterloo sits 20 minutes south of central Brussels and runs all three IB programmes alongside a US-pattern stream. The school draws a strong NATO and US corporate family base and is particularly popular with families landing on three to five year postings.
European School Brussels IV at Laeken runs the European Baccalaureate rather than the IB Diploma, but is included here because the curriculum sits alongside the IB cluster in admissions decisions. Places are tied to EU institution employment status.
Where IB families live in Brussels
IB families in Brussels cluster around five recognisable corridors. Uccle and the southern Brussels communes between the Bois de la Cambre and the Forêt de Soignes host the largest share of IB families, including most ISB and BEPS Ixelles parents. Watermael-Boitsfort and Auderghem sit closest to ISB and to several PYP feeder nurseries. Ixelles and Saint-Gilles, the inner ring south of the EU quarter, draw younger EU institution families using BEPS Ixelles or the European Schools. Tervuren, the leafy eastern commune outside the Region boundary, hosts a large NATO and diplomatic community and supplies a significant share of St John's intake. Waterloo, Lasne and Rhode-Saint-Genese, the southern commuter belt, cover the St John's and BEPS Limal catchments.
The IB profile suits Brussels well because postings are typically two to five years and families need a curriculum that travels. The Brussels IB Diploma transfers cleanly into other IB campuses worldwide, into UK universities via UCAS, into US universities via the Common Application and into Belgian universities through the standard equivalence framework. Admissions calendar
Applications for September 2026 entry opened at most Brussels IB schools between October 2025 and January 2026. The largest schools, ISB, St John's and BEPS Limal, close their main Year 7 and Diploma Programme intake by mid-February, with assessment days through March. Offers land in April with deposit and capital fee deadlines two weeks later. ISB holds the longest senior waiting list in the city, particularly for Year 11 and Year 12 entry, and operates a sibling priority system that accounts for around 40 percent of intake.
NATO and EU institution families often arrive mid-cycle, so Brussels IB schools are unusually flexible about late starts. Most accept rolling enrolment at PYP and lower MYP through the year. The Diploma Programme is harder, with any transfer after October of Year 12 risking gaps in internal assessments. Families planning a Brussels move should run the numbers through our cost calculator early, since the combined cost of housing and schooling in the southern Brussels communes runs roughly 25 percent above the national norm. Frequently asked questions
How many IB schools are in Brussels?
The Brussels metropolitan area, including Waterloo and the southern commune belt, currently lists around 12 authorised IB World Schools in 2026. Roughly nine deliver the full IB Diploma at sixth form. The remainder offer the Primary Years or Middle Years Programme only, with students transitioning to other Brussels secondaries at age 14 or 16.
What is the average IB Diploma score in Brussels?
Brussels IB schools average around 33 to 35 points in recent May sessions, above the global IB average of 30.3. International School of Brussels and St John's at Waterloo consistently average above 34. The European School system runs the European Baccalaureate rather than the IB, but produces comparable university outcomes.
How much do IB schools in Brussels cost?
IB Diploma tuition in Brussels runs from about EUR 18,000 per year at the smaller settings to roughly EUR 36,000 at International School of Brussels and BEPS senior phase. Capital fees of EUR 3,000 to EUR 8,000 are common at first registration. The European Schools, where places are tied to EU institution employment, are subsidised and much cheaper.
Can you transfer into a Brussels IB school mid-year?
Yes, particularly into PYP and lower MYP, where rolling admissions are common. NATO and EU institution families often arrive mid-cycle and Brussels schools are well practised at fast onboarding. Diploma Programme transfers after October of the first year are difficult because subject choices and internal assessments are locked.
Is IB recognised by Belgian universities?
Yes. Belgian universities including KU Leuven, UCLouvain, ULB and Ghent accept the IB Diploma for entry. Most faculties set a minimum score of 24 to 30 points and may require specific HL subjects for medicine, engineering or law. The Belgian medical and dental entrance exam still applies on top, regardless of school leaving qualification.
