Bilingual provision in Dubai

Dubai's bilingual schools sit at the intersection of three demand pools. French and German expatriate families looking for continued mother-tongue education. Emirati and Arab national families wanting strong Arabic alongside an internationally recognised English-medium curriculum. And, increasingly, multinational families who want their children to graduate with two living languages at near-native fluency.

Roughly 15 to 18 schools in Dubai operate what we would classify as a true bilingual programme, meaning core academic subjects taught in two languages at meaningful depth. That excludes the much larger group of schools that teach a foreign language as a subject alongside an English-medium curriculum. Most genuine bilingual schools sit in the maternelle or early primary years, with fewer carrying through to sixth form because of the operational difficulty of running two language streams to A Level or IB depth.

The strongest exception is Swiss International Scientific School Dubai, which operates parallel English, French and German streams across the full age range under an IB framework. Lycée Français International Georges Pompidou runs a French-dominant programme with significant English content. Several Arabic-English schools, notably Al Mawakeb and Al Diyafah High School, deliver substantial Arabic-medium teaching within an otherwise English curriculum.

Language combinations available

The dominant pairing in Dubai is English-French, served by the LFIGP network and the French stream at Swiss International. English-German is covered by DISD Deutsche Internationale Schule and the German stream at Swiss International. English-Arabic is the most common combination across school types, with stronger provision at Al Mawakeb School and selected GEMS schools that have invested in Arabic literacy as a differentiator. English-Mandarin remains rare in Dubai compared with Singapore or Hong Kong; GEMS International School Al Khail and a handful of others run Mandarin enrichment programmes but stop short of full bilingual delivery.

Illustrative example schools

The schools below illustrate the breadth of bilingual provision in Dubai. They are illustrative, not ranked.

Swiss International Scientific School Dubai at Al Jaddaf is the gold-standard multi-language IB World School in the city, with English, French and German streams running side by side from pre-primary through to the IB Diploma.

Lycée Français International Georges Pompidou, across its Oud Metha, Mirdif and Academic City sites, delivers the French national curriculum with substantial English content, leading to the baccalauréat and giving students full francophone and anglophone university options.

Al Mawakeb School (Al Garhoud and Al Barsha) is an Arabic-English bilingual school of long standing, popular with Emirati and Arab national families who want strong Arabic literacy alongside an American high school diploma pathway.

GEMS International School Al Khail runs an IB primary years programme with Mandarin enrichment, more accurately described as English-medium with strong language exposure than full bilingual delivery.

Where bilingual families live

Bilingual families settle close to their preferred school, which means clusters around each major site. Al Jaddaf, Downtown and Business Bay for Swiss International Scientific School. Oud Metha, Bur Dubai and Mirdif for the Lycée Français campuses. The Greens, The Springs and JLT for DISD families. Al Garhoud, Mirdif and Sharjah border communities for Al Mawakeb and similar Arabic-English schools.

Families taking on multi-language commitments often invest in maintaining both languages at home through nannies, weekend Saturday schools and structured family routines. The best bilingual outcomes correlate strongly with what happens outside the classroom; school choice alone is not enough.

Admissions and language assessment

Bilingual admissions in Dubai add a language assessment to the standard application. AEFE-affiliated schools require demonstrated French proficiency for entry beyond grande section. DISD assesses German competency for direct entry into Grundschule. Swiss International Scientific School assesses both languages for stream allocation. For Arabic-English schools the assessment is typically administered by the school, with placement either into the Arabic-strong or English-strong stream.

Applications open in October for September entry the following year at the better-known schools, with rolling admission at smaller bilingual sites. Compare schools head to head using our compare tool,.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as a bilingual school in Dubai?

We use bilingual to mean schools that deliver core subjects in two languages at roughly equal depth, not schools that simply teach a foreign language as a subject. By that standard Dubai has around 15 to 18 schools across French-English, German-English, Arabic-English and Spanish-English combinations.

How much do bilingual schools in Dubai cost?

Tuition for dedicated bilingual programmes ranges widely. AEFE-supported French-English schools run from $11,000 to $19,000. The premium multi-stream Swiss International Scientific School sits at $20,000 to $28,000. Arabic-English bilingual fees are typically $7,000 to $14,000.

Will my child fall behind in English if I choose bilingual?

Research from longitudinal studies of bilingual programmes consistently shows that children in well-run dual-language schools meet or exceed monolingual peers in both languages by the end of primary school, with stronger metalinguistic awareness.

Is Arabic a strong option in Dubai bilingual schools?

Yes. UAE Ministry of Education rules require Arabic to be taught at all schools, and many Dubai schools have invested in strong Arabic-English bilingual streams in early years. Provision tapers somewhat at secondary.
