The German school landscape in Manila
Manila is a single German curriculum city. The German European School Manila, known as GESM, in Paranaque is the only school in the Philippines that delivers the Lehrplan recognised by the Kultusministerkonferenz in Bonn. It is one of around 140 official German Schools Abroad funded in part by the Zentralstelle fur das Auslandsschulwesen, the German federal agency that supports German curriculum delivery in 73 countries.
GESM was founded in 1986, sits on a purpose built campus near Manila Bay and serves around 350 students from kindergarten through to the German International Abitur. The cohort is roughly 45 percent German passport holders, 30 percent dual citizens or German Filipino families, and the balance European and Asian families who specifically want a German educational track. Because there is only one school in this stream, families who prioritise the German curriculum tend to make GESM their first choice and rarely shortlist alongside the British or American schools.
Families who want German language exposure but not the full Lehrplan have a second route through the European section at International School Manila and the after school German programme at Goethe Institut Manila. Both are language enrichment rather than a curriculum substitute, so for the Abitur or the Hauptschulabschluss path, GESM remains the only Manila option.
Fees and the cost picture
GESM is positioned mid market by Manila international school standards. Tuition in the 2025 to 2026 academic year sits in the USD 9,000 to 14,000 range depending on year group, which places it below International School Manila and Brent but well above local bilingual options. A breakdown of the wider Manila fee ladder is in our Manila international school fees guide.
On top of tuition, GESM charges a one off entrance fee of around USD 2,500, a smaller annual development levy, and an optional bus service that varies by route. Books and the after school programme are included, which is unusual for Manila. The school accepts the German federal subsidy for documented German nationals, which can reduce tuition by 20 to 35 percent depending on family income and is processed through the Auslandsschulwesen application route.

Admissions and timing
GESM runs on a German academic calendar, with the year starting in mid August and finishing in late June. That is one week ahead of the Manila American calendar at ISM and a full month ahead of the British calendar at British School Manila. The starting date matters when families move during the European summer.
Applications for the August 2026 year opened in November 2025 and the priority window closes at the end of March 2026. The school accepts mid year transfers in kindergarten and primary if places exist, and across the Sekundarstufe in years 5 to 9. Year 10 transfers are reviewed case by case because the Mittlere Reife exam structure starts to bite. Year 11 and 12 transfers are accepted only from other German Schools Abroad, since the Abitur subject combinations are already locked in.
The admissions test is in German for years 3 and above. Families whose children do not yet have German can apply with an undertaking to use the school intensive German programme during the first 12 months.
Language pathways and the Abitur
GESM offers two upper school exit qualifications. The German International Abitur, sat in year 12, gives direct admission to German, Austrian and Swiss universities and is widely recognised by Anglophone institutions including the leading British and American universities. The school typically averages above 2.0 on the German grade scale, which sits well within the competitive range for German higher education.
For families whose children join later in the secondary years, GESM offers an English language track that exits with the High School Diploma and selected Advanced Placement subjects. This is a deliberate accommodation for the dual citizen and expatriate families whose children may not be ready for full Abitur level German. The path was reorganised in 2022 to align with the wider European Schools framework.
Language teaching is taken seriously across the whole school. German is the medium of instruction from kindergarten upward, English starts in year 1 as a strong second language, and Filipino is offered from year 5 as a third language option. French and Spanish are added from year 8.
Where German families live
German families in Manila cluster in two zones. The first is the Paranaque belt near GESM itself, including Better Living Subdivision, the Asean Village and the gated developments along Dona Soledad Avenue. These give a 10 to 20 minute commute by car and a similar bus journey on the school transport network. The second is the Makati and Bonifacio Global City corridor for families whose work base is in finance or German engineering firms with Manila offices, with a typical 35 to 50 minute commute either way.
For wider city context, our Manila city hub covers cost of living, housing and the relocation paperwork. Families looking at the wider Manila school market can also compare the British, American and IB tracks via the British curriculum hub and the IB hub.
For a sense of the German curriculum globally, the German curriculum primer covers the Lehrplan, the Abitur and university recognition outside Germany.
