Senior school landscape in Melbourne

Senior schooling in Melbourne is a more international market than the city's primary sector. From year 7 onward, the choice narrows to the senior exit qualification rather than the curriculum philosophy. Three exits dominate. The IB Diploma is offered at around eighteen schools and is increasingly the default for relocating families. The Victorian Certificate of Education, the VCE, is the Australian senior exit, sat by around 50,000 candidates a year statewide. Cambridge IGCSE is offered in years 9 and 10 as a bridge, but not as a full A Level pathway.

In practice, the senior school choice in Melbourne is between the IB Diploma route, the VCE route, or a parallel pathway model where students choose between them at year 11. Around twelve independents now offer the parallel model, the city's most distinctive senior school feature and the closest analogue to the dual pathway schools in Geneva or Brussels. International families typically lean to the IB Diploma for portability, and to the VCE for cost and local university access.

How many secondary international schools

Around 25 Melbourne schools deliver a recognised international senior exit in 2026. Eighteen run the full IB Diploma, including Wesley College, Methodist Ladies College, Carey Baptist Grammar, Caulfield Grammar, Trinity Grammar, Geelong Grammar Corio, Tintern, Mentone and Ivanhoe Grammar. Twelve offer the IB alongside the VCE as a parallel pathway, with Wesley, MLC and Carey the strongest examples. Eight run Cambridge IGCSE in years 9 and 10 as a bridge.

Beyond the IB Diploma, the VCE is the universal Australian senior exit, offered at every government, Catholic and independent secondary school in the state. Lycee Condorcet is the only Melbourne school running the French Baccalaureat through to terminale. There is no school in Victoria delivering the full GCE A Level at scale, the main structural gap for British families relocating from Dubai, Singapore or Hong Kong.

Illustrative example schools

Three illustrative schools, not a ranking. Each represents a different senior pathway model in Melbourne.

Wesley College senior school at St Kilda Road runs the IB Diploma and the VCE in parallel and has been one of Australia's strongest IB schools since 1985, regularly placing around 30 students into scores above 40. The senior school has around 600 students with a stable IB cohort of around 90. Tuition runs around AUD 38,000 to 44,000 a year.

Methodist Ladies College at Kew is one of Melbourne's longest established IB Diploma schools and offers the IB alongside the VCE in years 11 and 12. The senior school has around 220 students per cohort. MLC has a strong record of UK and US university placement, with around 25 per cent of leavers proceeding to overseas study. Tuition runs around AUD 40,000 to 46,000 a year.

Haileybury at Keysborough is the largest independent senior school in Victoria and runs the VCE with a Cambridge IGCSE bridge in years 9 and 10. It is co-educational under a single campus parallel learning model and serves a more diverse demographic than the inner city independents. Around 380 candidates in year 12. Tuition runs around AUD 33,000 to 41,000 a year for the senior years. Our best international schools in Melbourne guide goes deeper on these and the other strong senior providers.

Fees and the all in cost

Senior school fees in Melbourne sit in three bands. The lower band, AUD 28,000 to 34,000 a year, covers smaller independents and the IB programmes at Lycee Condorcet and some northeastern schools. The mid band, AUD 34,000 to 40,000 a year, covers the bulk of the independent senior schools including Haileybury, Carey, Mentone Grammar and Ivanhoe Grammar. The premium band, AUD 40,000 to 48,000 a year, covers Wesley St Kilda Road, Caulfield Grammar St Kilda Road, Methodist Ladies College, Geelong Grammar Corio and Scotch College.

Year 11 and 12 fees tend to sit at the top of each school's fee schedule because the IB Diploma and the VCE both require smaller class sizes and higher staffing ratios. Add an IB Diploma exam entry fee of around AUD 1,800 to 2,400 in year 12, a school based assessment levy at some schools, and a final year camp and graduation cost of AUD 800 to 1,800. Our international school fees in Melbourne guide compares the full senior school picture, and the compare tool lets you shortlist three senior schools side by side.

Admissions and where senior families live

Year 7 entry is the largest single intake at most Melbourne independents. Applications typically open in the February two years before the year 7 start and close in the August the year before, with assessment in early year 6. Year 9 and year 10 IGCSE intake at Haileybury, Caulfield and Carey runs a separate cycle in February and March of year 8. Year 11 entry into the IB Diploma at Wesley, MLC and Carey is the main international transfer point and runs with assessment in August of year 10. Mid year transfers into year 11 are possible at a small number of schools but most prefer the start of the two year cycle.

Senior families distribute across the same broad zones as the primary cohorts, but with longer commutes accepted in exchange for senior school fit. The St Kilda Road corridor for Wesley senior and Melbourne Grammar. The inner east for MLC, Camberwell Grammar, Trinity and Carey. The bayside corridor for Brighton Grammar, Haileybury and Mentone. The eastern suburbs corridor for Wesley Glen Waverley and Haileybury Keysborough. The northeastern corridor for Ivanhoe Grammar and Eltham College. International families relocating directly into year 11 tend to choose by IB programme strength rather than location. Our sibling hubs cover the IB Diploma, British curriculum and primary school markets for context.

Frequently asked questions

What senior exit qualifications are available in Melbourne?

Three main options. The IB Diploma is offered at around 18 Melbourne schools. The Victorian Certificate of Education, the VCE, is the default Australian senior exit. Cambridge IGCSE is offered as a year 9 and year 10 bridge at around eight independent schools. Full GCE A Levels are not available in Victoria at scale. The French Baccalaureat is offered only at Lycee Condorcet.

How many schools offer the IB Diploma in Melbourne?

Eighteen schools across the metropolitan area run the full IB Diploma in 2026, plus a further four offering the Diploma alongside the VCE in a parallel pathway model. The strongest cluster sits along the St Kilda Road corridor and in the inner east.

Will UK universities accept the VCE?

Yes. The VCE is recognised on the UCAS tariff and a strong VCE score of 90 ATAR or above is competitive at most UK universities. The IB Diploma carries slightly more weight at Oxbridge and at the Ivy League, but the VCE is well understood by UK admissions tutors and the strongest Melbourne independents have established relationships with UK university feeders.

How much do Melbourne secondary international schools cost?

Independent senior school fees range from AUD 28,000 to 48,000 a year. The IB Diploma fee tends to be at the upper end of the school's overall fee schedule because of the higher staffing ratio in years 11 and 12. The all in cost including capital levy, exam entry, uniform and laptop is typically 20 to 25 per cent higher.

When should I apply for year 11 entry?

Most independent schools accept year 11 transfer applications up to twelve months ahead with assessment in the August of year 10. Mid year transfers into year 11 are possible at a small number of schools but most prefer the start of year 11 for the two year IB Diploma or VCE cycle. International applicants relocating mid year are generally accommodated.
