The Delhi primary curriculum mix
The international primary segment in the NCR is dominated by the IB Primary Years Programme, with at least 10 PYP-authorised primaries operating across Delhi, Gurugram and Noida. British EYFS to Year 6 sits second, anchored by The British School Chanakyapuri and the British School Noida campus. American elementary is concentrated at The American Embassy School. French maternelle and elementary run at LFID, and German Grundschule sits inside DSND. Cambridge Primary as a standalone track is rare in the NCR; it tends to bolt on to the IB or British primary as a backup.
What matters in primary year selection is less the curriculum label than the school's primary teaching culture: small group reading, hands-on mathematics manipulatives, modern languages from Year 1, structured outdoor and sports time. The leading NCR primaries deliver these regardless of the IB versus British versus American framing, which is why most parents prioritise the visit over the curriculum diagram.
Fees and the three tiers
Primary fees in the NCR group into three tiers. The value tier (INR 4 to 5.5 lakh) covers schools such as Heritage Xperiential Learning School and G.D. Goenka primary years. The mid tier (INR 5.5 to 7 lakh) covers most established names including Pathways Noida primary, Step by Step primary and Lancers International primary. The premium tier (INR 7 to 8 lakh) is the primary at Pathways Aravali, Shri Ram Aravali and the daytime cohort at the British School Chanakyapuri. AES sits in its own bracket. Our New Delhi fees guide details the all-in cost including capital levies, technology charges and transport.
Embassy primaries are cheaper than the equivalent mainstream IB primary year for year, partly because of the home government subsidy and partly because the smaller, less elaborate campuses cost less to operate. A premium NCR primary year is not five times the value of a budget option; family choice tends to come down to commute, sibling discount and the strength of the primary leadership team.
Compare three primary schools side by side
Most NCR primaries look similar in their brochures. Side-by-side comparison surfaces real differences in class sizes, language provision, exit destinations and total annual cost.
Illustrative example schools
The four schools below are illustrative, not a ranking. Each represents a different primary track in the NCR.
The American Embassy School in Chanakyapuri runs US elementary from Kindergarten to Grade 5 with the smallest year groups in the segment. Strong placement into AES middle school and the IB cohort that follows.
The British School Chanakyapuri delivers EYFS to Year 6 against the English national curriculum, with Cambridge primary checkpoints in Year 6. Strong language provision in French and Hindi from Year 1.
Pathways World School Aravali in Gurugram runs IB PYP across one of the largest primary cohorts in the NCR. Strong outdoor and sports provision; serves families across the Gurugram premium residential corridor.
Step by Step World School Noida delivers IB PYP with smaller cohort sizes and a more conservative academic culture. Often the first choice for NRI returnees and East Delhi corporate families.
Where international primary families live
Primary location decisions follow the parent's commute as well as the school's. For embassy and AES families the cluster is Chanakyapuri, Shanti Niketan and Anand Niketan. British School families spread across Vasant Vihar and Vasant Kunj. Pathways and Shri Ram Aravali pull families to DLF Golf Course Road, DLF Phase 1 and Phase 2 and Sushant Lok. Pathways Noida and Step by Step pull families to Noida Sectors 100 to 132. Returning NRI families and Indian senior corporate families also use Heritage Xperiential, which draws from South Delhi and the start of the Gurugram corridor.
Planning the secondary handover
Most NCR primaries feed into the same school's secondary, but families relocating internally still need to plan the secondary handover deliberately. The IB PYP child can transition into IB MYP at the same school, into IGCSE at the British School, or into US middle school at AES. The British primary child has a smooth path into IGCSE at the British School Chanakyapuri or at Pathways. The AES child usually stays in the same school. Cross-curriculum moves at age 11 are common in Delhi because corporate relocations break the assumed feed.
For families likely to leave India during secondary, the IB PYP and British primary pathways are both highly portable. CBSE primary is well-respected academically inside India but tends to be a less smooth fit if a corporate move sends the family to Singapore, Dubai or London during Years 7 to 10. See the secondary hub for the next step.
Admissions calendar
The Indian academic year runs April to March, which sets the dominant rhythm. Mainstream NCR international primaries open admissions in September to November, with priority deadlines in early November and offers in December and January. Embassy and embassy-linked primaries follow the European or US calendar with January admissions for an August intake. Mid-year admissions stay open at most schools subject to space, with rolling assessment in English and mathematics.
For Year 1 entry, expect a play-based assessment plus parent interview. For Years 4 to 6, schools test reading comprehension, mathematics and short written work. Tier 1 schools accept the previous school's CAT4, MAP or PIRA results in lieu of internal testing for relocating families.
