How many primary schools in Phuket

Phuket has around eighteen schools running an English medium primary programme from Reception through Year 6 in 2026. The majority deliver the English National Curriculum or Cambridge Primary framework, reflecting the British curriculum bias of BISP, HeadStart, Kajonkiet and several smaller schools. Two schools deliver the IB Primary Years Programme: UWC Thailand in Thalang as part of its full IB continuum, and Berda Claude International School in Mai Khao as a standalone primary offer. Oakridge and the smaller QSI campus deliver an American Common Core influenced programme alongside Cambridge Primary, the only American leaning options at primary stage on the island.

Primary cohort sizes vary widely. BISP Primary is the largest single primary section on the island at roughly 320 children across Reception to Year 6. UWC Thailand PYP runs around 280 across the same age range. HeadStart Primary sits at around 220. Most of the boutique primary providers run 60 to 120 children across the full primary range. This matters at admissions because waiting list dynamics work very differently at a 60 child primary than at a 320 child primary.

Fees and the Phuket tiers

Primary tuition in Phuket divides into three rough tiers. The value tier sits at THB 230,000 to THB 310,000 a year and covers the smaller boutique primary schools, the bilingual primary programmes and the lower year groups of the mid tier providers. The mid tier runs THB 310,000 to THB 470,000 and captures HeadStart Primary, Kajonkiet Primary, Oakridge Primary and Berda Claude PYP. The premium tier, THB 470,000 to THB 590,000, includes BISP Primary, UWC Thailand PYP and the upper years of the larger schools.

Primary fees are typically 20 to 35 per cent below the equivalent secondary tuition at the same school, which means the family budget calculation looks materially different for primary only households compared to households with children spanning primary and secondary. School bus services typically add THB 50,000 to THB 80,000 a year at primary, a slightly higher proportion of headline fees than at secondary. Illustrative example schools

The schools below are illustrative, not a ranking. Each has at least eight years of operating history at primary stage on the island.

Convenient for Koh Kaew, Phuket Town and the inner west coast.

UWC Thailand PYP in Thalang is the only IB Primary Years Programme on the main school cluster on the island. Around 280 children from Reception equivalent through Year 6, with the distinctive UWC mission focus visible across the primary years. Where primary families live

Primary school families in Phuket cluster along the western and northern coasts with a meaningful southern outlier. Cherngtalay and Bang Tao, on the west coast, host the largest concentration of primary families, drawn by proximity to BISP, UWC Thailand and the cluster of boutique primary schools that serve the Laguna corridor. The west coast residential pockets dominate this segment, with Cherngtalay villa estates the most popular single area for primary aged families.

Koh Kaew and Phuket Town host the primary families attached to BISP, Kajonkiet and Phuket International Children’s Garden. This is the most accessible primary cluster for working parents commuting into the centre. Chalong, Rawai and Nai Harn, in the south, host the primary families attached to HeadStart and the smaller southern providers, with a notable Russian and Eastern European concentration. Mai Khao and the airport corridor have a smaller primary cohort, often anchored by Berda Claude PYP and the boutique nurseries that transition into BISP or UWC Thailand at Year 1 or Year 3. Admissions calendar

Most Phuket international primary schools align with the August start of the international school year, with a meaningful January intake at the larger providers. The popular Reception entry at BISP, UWC Thailand and HeadStart opens registration in October of the preceding year, with assessments running through November to February and confirmations issued by March. Year 1 to Year 5 entry is more flexible, with rolling assessments through the year and most schools accepting mid year entrants subject to space.

The most over-subscribed single entry points are Reception at BISP and PYP Year 1 at UWC Thailand, where waitlists at the most popular dates can reach six to twelve months. Year 5 and Year 6 entry can be harder than the middle primary years because of cohort consolidation ahead of secondary transition. Mid year entry is common, particularly in January for families relocating during the European Christmas window and in April for families moving from the Southern Hemisphere school cycle.
