How many primary schools in Shenzhen
Shenzhen has around 26 schools offering a recognised international primary programme in 2026, defined as schools where the primary phase from Year 1 or Grade 1 through to age 11 or 12 is taught primarily in English or substantively bilingual Mandarin Chinese-English. Most run as part of a K-12 or K-9 school with both a primary and a secondary phase on the same campus, providing continuity from age 5 through to graduation. Around 6 of the 26 are standalone primary settings without an onward secondary phase, requiring children to transfer at age 11 or 12.
The 26 providers split between foreign-passport-only international schools (around 9 schools, restricted by Chinese law to children holding a foreign passport) and Sino-foreign bilingual schools (around 17 schools, licensed by the Shenzhen Education Bureau and accepting mainland Chinese passport holders). The foreign-passport-only cohort includes Shekou International School, the International School of Nanshan, QSI Shenzhen, ISA Shekou and the American International School of Guangzhou Shenzhen Campus. The bilingual cohort includes ISF Academy, Yew Chung International School of Shenzhen, BASIS Shenzhen, Shen Wai International and the Shekou expansion campuses of established Chinese schools.
The Shenzhen international primary market has expanded steadily since 2015, with capacity growing by around 60 per cent over the decade. Growth has been driven by mainland Chinese returnee families and dual-passport families. The strongest single growth segment has been the bilingual tier serving mainland Chinese nationals who want an English-medium primary pathway with the option to transition to a Western university later. Foreign-passport-only international schools have grown more slowly, reflecting the more stable expatriate corporate population.
Curriculum options at primary
Shenzhen primary schools deliver four main curriculum models. The IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) is the largest single curriculum at primary level, with around 9 IB World Schools authorised for the PYP in the city including Shekou International, the International School of Nanshan, ISA Shekou and ISF Academy. The English National Curriculum is delivered by around 7 schools including Harrow Innovation Leadership Academy, King's School Shenzhen and Whittle School Shenzhen. The American Common Core elementary curriculum is delivered by around 4 schools including QSI Shenzhen, the American International School of Guangzhou Shenzhen Campus and BASIS Shenzhen. The Chinese national curriculum with substantive English layering is delivered by the Sino-foreign bilingual schools.
The choice between curriculum models matters less at primary level than at secondary, because most primary schools follow internationally portable broad themes around literacy, numeracy, science and the arts. Where the choice matters more is in the planned onward pathway. IB PYP feeds naturally into IB Middle Years and IB Diploma at secondary. English National Curriculum primary feeds into IGCSE and A Level. American Common Core elementary feeds into the US High School Diploma and AP courses. The Chinese national curriculum bilingual primary feeds into the bilingual upper school at age 14 or 15.

Fees and tiers
Primary fees in Shenzhen group into three tiers. The bilingual tier (ISF Academy, Yew Chung International, Shen Wai International and the Shen Wai Sino-foreign primary providers) charges CNY 180,000 to CNY 240,000 a year for the primary phase. The foreign-passport-only tier (Shekou International, International School of Nanshan, QSI Shenzhen, ISA Shekou) charges CNY 230,000 to CNY 290,000 a year for primary. The premium tier (Harrow Innovation Leadership Academy, Whittle School Shenzhen and the new British international school openings) charges CNY 280,000 to CNY 330,000 a year for primary.
Capital and registration fees of CNY 25,000 to CNY 45,000 are typically charged on first entry across all three tiers. School lunch, buses, uniform and activities typically add CNY 25,000 to CNY 40,000 a year on top. Our Shenzhen fees guide models the all-in cost picture by year group across the primary phase, including the loading from optional after-school enrichment and weekend Mandarin Chinese tutorial. Sibling discounts of 10 to 15 per cent are common across the bilingual tier and the foreign-passport-only tier but are rare at the premium tier.
Where primary-age families live
Shenzhen primary-age families cluster around three residential corridors. Shekou and Nanshan host the largest concentration, with the Coastal City, Shekou Garden, Mont Orchid and Houhai high-rise compounds dominating the housing stock. Most Shekou and Nanshan compounds are within 15 to 25 minutes of the main primary international schools (Shekou International, International School of Nanshan, ISA Shekou, ISF Academy and QSI Shenzhen), allowing primary-aged children to keep a short morning commute.
Futian and the central business district host a smaller cluster of dual-career families with primary-age children, typically using the BASIS Shenzhen Futian campus or the bilingual primary providers in the Futian and Luohu corridor. Longgang and Pingshan in the east-north host most BASIS Shenzhen Longgang and Shenzhen College of International Education primary families, with newer high-rise apartment estates along the Longgang Avenue corridor. School bus networks reach most residential compounds within a 30 minute pickup window. Our Shenzhen neighbourhoods guide walks through residential trade-offs by school choice in more detail.
Admissions and the application calendar
The Shenzhen primary school year runs from August to June for the foreign-passport-only international schools and from late August to early July for the Sino-foreign bilingual schools. Applications for the August 2026 academic year opened at most Shenzhen primary schools between September and December 2025. Year 1 and Grade 1 entry are the most competitive points because most primary cohorts rebuild substantially at the start of the primary phase, with limited new places opening at Year 3 to Year 5.
Shekou International, ISNS and QSI Shenzhen run rolling admissions through the year where capacity exists, with a stronger main intake in August. ISA Shekou runs a December priority deadline with assessment days through January and offers in late January. ISF Academy and the Sino-foreign bilingual primary providers run a competitive entrance assessment in March, weighted on English literacy, maths and a short Mandarin Chinese task. Mid-year primary transfers are usually possible. The Shenzhen Education Bureau requires authenticated previous school records for all transfer students, with paperwork taking 4 to 6 weeks on top of the school's own admissions timeline.
