The Taipei early years landscape
Taipei has more than fifty internationally aligned early years settings, the largest of any Taiwanese city. They split into four categories. The first is the Foreign School early years, with Taipei European School running an EYFS-aligned nursery and pre-kindergarten on Yangmingshan and Taipei American School running a US-style junior kindergarten in Tianmu. The second is the stand-alone Montessori casa cohort across Da'an, Xinyi, Tianmu and Neihu. The third is the reggio Emilia-inspired and play-based preschool cluster in Da'an, often run by small founding teams of bilingual Taiwanese teachers with British or American early years training. The fourth is the bilingual experimental school kindergarten, attached to schools such as KangChiao Linkou and Wagor New Taipei, with English and Mandarin parallel delivery from age three.
For a Taipei family choosing an early years setting, the practical question is rarely which philosophy is best, because there is good evidence behind all four. The real question is which philosophy and location best supports the Year 1 school the family is targeting, because the application calendars for Foreign Schools, experimental schools and Taiwanese national schools begin nine to twelve months ahead of the Year 1 entry. Philosophies: Montessori, reggio and EYFS
Three philosophies dominate. Montessori, with its prepared environment, uninterrupted work cycle and specific materials, is the most prescriptive and the most consistent across settings. Reggio Emilia-inspired settings emphasise project-based learning, open-ended exploration and the role of the environment as the third teacher. The British EYFS framework, used inside Taipei European School and several Cambridge-aligned bilingual preschools, structures learning into seven areas with formal observation and assessment from age three. Most Taipei settings blend at least two approaches in practice, with reggio common at ages two to four and a more structured Montessori or EYFS framework emerging at ages four to six. Illustrative example settings
The settings below are illustrative, not a ranking. Each shows a different point on the Taipei early years spectrum.
Taipei European School Early Years on Yangmingshan in Shilin District runs an EYFS-aligned nursery and pre-kindergarten with three language sections, British, French and German, in the lower years. Foreign-passport entry, with the natural Year 1 route into the corresponding TES national section.
Taipei American School Lower School Junior Kindergarten in Tianmu runs a US-style early years programme inside the Lower School. Single-site, with a natural Year 1 route into the TAS Lower School and the US curriculum pathway.
Cobblestone Preschool Taipei in Da'an is one of the established reggio-inspired settings in central Taipei, with bilingual delivery in Mandarin and English and an outdoor programme that uses Da'an Forest Park. Most graduates move to bilingual experimental schools or Foreign Schools at age six.
Planning the Year 1 transition
The Year 1 transition is the single most planned-for moment in a Taipei family's early years. Foreign School application calendars typically open in November for the following August intake, with priority places allocated by February and ESL screening for non-native English speakers from January onwards. Bilingual experimental school applications run on a similar calendar, with a test-based component in addition to interview. Taiwanese national school applications are catchment-based and registered later in spring. Most credible Taipei preschools run parent briefings on the routes available, and the strongest settings provide visit support and admissions referees. For the next-stage map see our Taipei primary schools hub and the Taipei bilingual hub.
Where preschool families live in Taipei
Two clusters dominate. Da'an and Xinyi in central Taipei City hold the largest stand-alone preschool cluster, with Montessori and reggio-inspired settings concentrated west of Daan Forest Park. Three-bedroom apartments in Da'an run TWD 90,000 to TWD 160,000 a month, in Xinyi from TWD 110,000. Tianmu in Shilin holds the natural feeder cluster for Taipei American School and Taipei European School, with several preschools within walking distance of each other along Tianmu East Road. Neihu, on the eastern edge of Taipei City, holds a tech-family preschool cohort with newer apartment stock. For the residential map see our Taipei neighbourhood guide.
Frequently asked questions
At what age do nurseries in Taipei start?
Most international nurseries in Taipei accept children from around eighteen months for the toddler programme, with full preschool entry from age three. Some Montessori settings accept from age fifteen months on a part-time basis. Foreign Schools, including Taipei European School and Taipei American School, do not run a true infant programme and start at nursery for age three or pre-kindergarten for age four.
How much do nurseries and preschools cost in Taipei?
Stand-alone international preschools sit at TWD 250,000 to TWD 500,000 a year for full-day attendance. Foreign School early years, inside Taipei European School and Taipei American School, sit at TWD 600,000 to TWD 700,000 a year, plus capital fees on first entry. Materials and outdoor levies typically add TWD 20,000 to TWD 40,000 a year.
What philosophies are common in Taipei preschools?
The four most common philosophies in Taipei international preschools are Montessori, reggio Emilia-inspired, EYFS-aligned British early years, and play-based American early childhood. Many settings blend two or more, with reggio approaches very common at the youngest ages and a more structured Montessori or EYFS framework emerging from age four onwards.
Can Taiwanese nationals attend international preschools?
Stand-alone international preschools in Taipei admit Taiwanese nationals freely. The Foreign Schools, including Taipei European School and Taipei American School, restrict their own early years to foreign passport holders, dual nationals and Taiwanese returnees who qualify. This means most Taiwanese-national families use stand-alone preschools and transition to bilingual or experimental schools at Year 1.
How do I plan the move into Year 1?
Most Taipei international preschools begin the Year 1 transition process in the autumn term twelve months ahead of the move, including school visits, application support and language readiness screening. Common Year 1 destinations include Taipei European School, Taipei American School, KangChiao Linkou and other bilingual experimental schools. The application calendar typically opens in November for the following August.
Where are the strongest preschool clusters in Taipei?
The strongest preschool clusters are in Da'an and Xinyi inside Taipei City and Tianmu inside Shilin. Da'an and Xinyi hold high middle-class density and several Montessori and reggio settings. Tianmu is the natural anchor for families heading to Taipei American School or Taipei European School at Year 1, with multiple feeder preschools close to the foothills of Yangmingshan.
