Brussels is the more expensive but more institutionally connected posting, with elite international schools and unmatched language depth thanks to the EU presence. Both deliver excellent IB Diploma provision.
Schools landscape side by side
Barcelona blends international names with strong Spanish bilingual schools. Names families recognise include the American School of Barcelona, Benjamin Franklin International School (BFIS), the British School of Barcelona (Castelldefels), St Peter's School, Oak House and the European International School. Many Catalan bilingual schools (Aula Escola Europea, Garbi Pere Verges) authorise the IB Diploma in senior years. See Barcelona schools hub.
Brussels has one of the most concentrated international school markets in Europe. Flagships parents shortlist include the International School of Brussels (ISB), the British School of Brussels (BSB), the European Schools (Brussels I, II, III and IV), the International Montessori School, BEPS International School and the Lycee Francais de Bruxelles. EU institution staff have priority access to the European Schools at near-zero cost. See Brussels schools hub.

Fees and value for money
Barcelona runs cheaper at the mid-tier. BFIS and ASB publish secondary fees of EUR 18,000 to EUR 26,000. Mid-tier IB and bilingual schools sit at EUR 9,000 to EUR 14,000. Add a Catalan registration deposit (often EUR 1,500 to EUR 4,000 refundable on exit) and bus and lunch fees of EUR 3,000 to EUR 5,000 combined. Many schools offer 5 to 15 percent sibling discounts.
Brussels is materially more expensive at the top. ISB publishes annual fees of EUR 28,000 to EUR 38,000. BSB sits at EUR 22,000 to EUR 33,000. BEPS runs EUR 16,000 to EUR 24,000. The European Schools charge a token fee for EU staff (near zero), opening to private fee-paying families at around EUR 12,000 to EUR 20,000 a year. Use the cost calculator for a five year all-in projection.
Curriculum availability
Barcelona covers Spanish bilingual (the cultural default), British, American and IB. Pure British and pure American schools sit alongside trilingual Catalan-Spanish-English schools that lead to the IB Diploma. Children placed early in Spanish bilingual programmes reach fluency within two to three years.
Brussels covers the IB Diploma (dominant at ISB and BSB), the European Baccalaureate at the European Schools, IGCSE plus A Level at British schools and the French Baccalaureate at the Lycee. The European Baccalaureate is excellent and widely accepted across EU universities. Read our IB hub for the comparison.
Neighbourhoods families pick
In Barcelona, families pick Pedralbes and Sarria for proximity to BFIS, Sant Cugat and Esplugues for ASB and St Peter's, Castelldefels for BSB on the coast, and Sant Just Desvern for the European International School. Lifestyle and climate
Barcelona has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters, warm humid summers around 28 to 32 degrees Celsius and beach and mountain access within thirty minutes. Public transport is excellent. Healthcare on Spain's public system is solid, supplemented by private insurance. Tourist pressure on housing is the real friction point and rents have risen sharply since 2023.
Brussels has a cool oceanic climate with mild summers and grey winters. The city is compact, walkable and well connected by Eurostar to London, Thalys to Paris and ICE to Frankfurt. Healthcare on Belgium's social security plus mutuelle is excellent. The expat community is large, transient and well organised around schools, sports clubs and weekend trips through the EU.
Verdict: who picks which city
Choose Barcelona if Spanish-language exposure, sunshine and lower living costs outweigh slightly higher friction on housing and admissions. It suits families relocating from elsewhere in Europe or the US, plus households planning university applications in Spain, the UK or France.
Choose Brussels if your career anchors to EU institutions, NATO or major multinationals, you can access the European Schools at near-zero cost, and you value linguistic depth and easy onward travel. See Madrid vs Barcelona for the in-Spain comparison.
