Barcelona and Seoul attract different family profiles. Barcelona is the Mediterranean capital of Catalonia with a varied bilingual school market, a year-round outdoor lifestyle and an EU visa framework that suits portable careers. Seoul is the senior corporate posting with a tighter premium international school list, a much faster pace and strong package culture. Both have excellent public transport and safe public space; both have housing that costs less than London or Singapore for equivalent quality.

Schools landscape side by side

Barcelona's international list is wider than its size suggests. The American School of Barcelona, Benjamin Franklin International School, SEK International School Catalunya, the British School of Barcelona, Hamelin-Laie International School and the European International School of Barcelona cover most of the expat market. SEK and Hamelin-Laie are full IB World Schools. American School and BFIS deliver the American pathway alongside IB. Bilingual Spanish-Catalan-English is the dominant model.

Seoul has a smaller premium list but each school is large and established. Seoul Foreign School (British and IB, since 1912), Seoul International School (American with AP), Yongsan International School of Seoul (American), Dwight School Seoul (full IB) and Korea International School cover most expat families. Asia Pacific International School and Chadwick International (Songdo) add depth. Capacity is tight for Years 7 and 12 at SFS and YISS.

Fees and value for money

Barcelona is one of the cheaper European international cities. Most premium schools sit at EUR 6,500 to 18,000 for tuition, rising to EUR 18,000 to 32,000 all-in for the IB Diploma when you add registration, capital and IB exam fees. The European International School of Barcelona runs EUR 6,440 to 13,710. SEK Catalunya runs EUR 11,000 to 17,500. See the fees explorer for school-level numbers.

Seoul premium fees run KRW 28 million to 38 million at SFS depending on year group (USD 21,000 to 28,000), with YISS landing close to KRW 36 million for the first year including one-off enrolment fees of KRW 4 million. Dwight Seoul and SIS sit in a similar range. Annual increases at the premium tier track 4 to 6 percent. Most Western corporate packages include education allowances that close the gap on tuition.

Curriculum availability

Both cities deliver the IB Diploma, American AP and British curriculum. Barcelona has more bilingual Spanish-Catalan options and broader access to the Spanish baccalaureate (Bachillerato) for families staying long term. Seoul leans heavier on the American AP pathway through SIS and YISS, with full IB at Dwight and SFS. Compare options on the IB hub.

Neighbourhoods families pick

Barcelona families pick Sant Just Desvern and Esplugues for the American School and BFIS, Sarrià-Sant Gervasi and Pedralbes for the British School and Hamelin-Laie, and the Maresme coast (Sitges and Castelldefels south, Premià de Mar north) for sea-front living and SEK Catalunya. Family three-bedroom apartments in Pedralbes run EUR 2,400 to 4,500 per month.

Seoul expat families cluster in Yongsan and Itaewon for YISS, Seongbuk-dong for SFS, and Gangnam for SIS and Dwight. Compounds with gardens in Hannam-dong run KRW 6 million to 12 million per month, with high-end Gangnam apartments at KRW 5 million to 10 million. School-bus routes are dense in central Seoul.

Lifestyle and climate

Barcelona has mild Mediterranean winters, hot dry summers, beach within walking distance of most central neighbourhoods, and a creative scene that suits families with cultural interests. Public health, public transport and safety rank well among European cities. Seoul has cold dry winters, hot humid summers, world-class public transport and exceptional consumer infrastructure. The pace is faster, the work culture longer, and weekend trips into the wider Korean countryside are easier than they look. Direct flights from Seoul cover all of Asia; from Barcelona, most of Europe.

Family schedules look different. Barcelona families eat late, run later school start times (often 9:00 with afternoon finish) and use weekends for beach, mountains or short flights into the rest of Europe. Seoul families run earlier and longer school days, with strong after-school academy culture (hagwon) that international school children sometimes participate in for languages or maths. Both cities have safe public space for older children to travel independently, which is a real factor for families with Years 7 to 12.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose Barcelona if you want a European base, mild weather year-round, a varied bilingual school market and the EU visa flexibility that allows for portable work. It is the easier city for spouses on freelance or remote roles.

Choose Seoul if the package is materially larger and your role anchors in North Asia. Seoul's premium schools (SFS, YISS, SIS, Dwight) are well-established and produce strong senior-year outcomes. Public safety and public infrastructure are at world-class level.

Most families we work with run both through the cost calculator. The five year all-in delta is usually USD 60,000 to 130,000 in Barcelona's favour for similar school tier, mostly through housing and household costs.
