Beijing has the deeper, more expensive and more institutional international school market of the two. Barcelona is smaller, much cheaper, and dominated by mid-priced British and bilingual schools that sit comfortably within most relocation packages. Climate, family safety and weekend culture are wildly different, so the decision is rarely a close call once you have priced both.
Schools landscape side by side
Beijing's market is regulated by the Beijing Municipal Education Commission and split between schools that admit only foreign passport holders, such as the Western Academy of Beijing and the International School of Beijing, and schools open to Chinese nationals such as Dulwich College Beijing and Harrow Beijing. Flagships parents recognise include WAB in Shunyi, the International School of Beijing, Dulwich, Harrow Beijing, the British School of Beijing Shunyi and the Canadian International School. Capacity is generally good outside WAB and ISB.
Barcelona has a smaller market by school count but unusually broad curriculum coverage. The schools that dominate shortlists are the British School of Barcelona, the American School of Barcelona, Benjamin Franklin International, the Oak House School and the International School of Barcelona. Catalonia also funds a strong concertada system that some bilingual families combine with weekend English programmes. Demand is steady rather than acute outside the IB Diploma cohort at BSB and BFIS.

Fees and value for money
Beijing is one of Asia's most expensive cities for international school fees. WAB publishes 2026 secondary tuition of about CNY 380,000 to 450,000 with primary at CNY 320,000 to 380,000. Dulwich Beijing's headline range is CNY 245,000 to 373,000. ISB and Harrow Beijing sit in similar bands. On top of tuition, families should budget for a one-off capital levy and an annual debenture or building fee at several of these schools.
Barcelona is materially cheaper. BSB and ASB publish secondary fees of roughly EUR 18,000 to 24,000, with American School of Barcelona, BFIS and Oak House similar. Once you add registration, transport, lunch and IB or A Level exam fees you should budget EUR 22,000 to 32,000 all-in per child per year. See our Barcelona fees guide for the full picture and use the cost calculator to model a five year all-in number per child.
Curriculum availability
Both cities cover the global big three: IB, British (IGCSE and A Level) and American (AP and SAT). Beijing tilts IB and British heavy, with American provision concentrated at ISB and the Canadian International School. Barcelona tilts British and IB heavy, with Benjamin Franklin and ASB the American anchors. The IB Diploma is the safest portable credential in either city, particularly for families who may move again within five years.

Neighbourhoods families pick
In Beijing, international school families cluster in Shunyi, especially Capital Paradise, Riviera, Quanfa and Yosemite, where WAB, BSB Shunyi and the International School of Beijing sit. Inside the Fifth Ring Road, Chaoyang and Sanlitun work for Dulwich and Harrow Beijing families. A four-bedroom villa in Shunyi runs CNY 35,000 to 60,000 per month and most families travel between 30 and 50 minutes to school by bus.
In Barcelona, families pick Sarria Sant Gervasi, Pedralbes, Esplugues de Llobregat and Sant Cugat del Valles for the western school corridor (BSB, ASB, BFIS, ISB). The Maresme coast around Castelldefels is the alternative for families who want sea views. A four-bedroom semi in Sant Cugat runs EUR 2,500 to 4,500 per month with garden, while Pedralbes apartments cost more for less space.
Lifestyle and climate
Beijing has four distinct seasons, with hot humid summers and cold dry winters that can drop to minus 10 degrees Celsius. Air quality is materially better than a decade ago but still drives family routines, particularly in winter. Compound life in Shunyi is suburban, safe and structured. Barcelona is Mediterranean, with mild winters around 10 degrees Celsius and warm summers around 27 to 30. Beach weekends define family life from April to October. Barcelona is safer in survey data, with petty crime the main concern. Beijing has unmatched onward access to Asia; Barcelona is well connected to the rest of Europe and the Americas through Madrid.
Verdict: who picks which city
Choose Beijing if the role pays a premium, your family wants institutional schools at WAB or ISB scale, and you value the experience of living inside the world's second largest economy. It suits families with older children who will benefit from a deep IB Diploma cohort.
Choose Barcelona if you want value for money, sun, beach and a softer family rhythm. It is the stronger city for families with younger children who want the British curriculum, plenty of outdoor time and easy weekend travel.
Most families we work with run both cities through the cost calculator before they commit. The five year all-in delta between similar schools and similar housing is usually USD 110,000 to 160,000 in Barcelona's favour.
Frequently asked questions
Is Beijing or Barcelona cheaper for international school families in 2026?
Barcelona is meaningfully cheaper, both on school fees and on cost of living. Beijing premium international schools run roughly two to three times the cost of equivalent Barcelona schools on a like-for-like basis.
Which city has better international schools?
Beijing has the deeper institutional bench led by WAB, ISB, Dulwich and Harrow. Barcelona has a broader value bench led by BSB, ASB and BFIS. The best fit depends on whether you want depth or value.
Is the family visa easier in Beijing or Barcelona?
Barcelona is easier for EU citizens and broadly comparable for non-EU corporate moves through the Highly Qualified Worker or Digital Nomad routes. Beijing's Z work visa plus S1 dependent visa process is well understood but heavier on documentation.
How long does the school admissions process take in each city?
Beijing's top tier (WAB, ISB) often runs 8 to 16 weeks with health checks and visa coordination. Barcelona typically returns decisions in four to eight weeks outside the IB Diploma cohort.
Where do most international school families live in each city?
Beijing families cluster in Shunyi compounds and inside the Fifth Ring Road around Sanlitun. Barcelona families pick Sarria Sant Gervasi, Pedralbes, Esplugues, Sant Cugat and the Maresme coast.
