Dubai and Munich attract different families. Each city offers world-class international schools, but the school markets are structured differently and so is the cost of raising children inside them. Cross-reference fees on our fees hub and run both cities through the cost calculator before you decide. The pillar pages Dubai and Munich have the deeper school directory for each side.
Schools landscape side by side
Dubai's market is huge, with more than 220 KHDA-regulated private schools and around a third following British, IB or American curricula. Flagships parents recognise include GEMS Wellington International, JESS Dubai, Dubai College, Repton, Dwight School Dubai and Dubai International Academy. Capacity is generally good outside the very top names and most families secure an offer within a single term.
Munich has roughly a dozen fully international schools serving around 8,000 expat children. The names families shortlist most often are Bavarian International School in Haimhausen, Munich International School in Starnberg, the European School Munich in Neuperlach, the Phorms Munich bilingual schools, and the Bavarian state Gymnasium with international stream. The Bavarian state system itself is strong and many German-speaking expats use it instead of paying for international school.

Fees and value for money
Dubai fees for secondary average USD 18,000 to 24,000 with premium schools at USD 28,000 to 30,000. KHDA caps annual fee increases against inspection ratings, which gives parents budget visibility most cities cannot match. Our Dubai fees guide covers the all-in load. Munich's international schools cluster between EUR 16,340 and EUR 22,090 a year at Bavarian International School, with Munich International School slightly higher. Year 1 capital and registration fees of EUR 6,000 to 12,000 are common. The state Gymnasium remains nominally free, which is a significant lever if your children can handle German.
Curriculum availability
Dubai is heavily British and IB, with American and Indian CBSE as the next tier. Munich is IB and German Abitur dominant, with British and American provision available but thinner. For a child likely to apply to UK or US universities, Dubai offers more options and tighter curriculum fit. For a child willing to learn German and stay at least five years, Munich's free state route plus a strong public university system is hard to beat on value. See the IB hub for the portable middle path.
Neighbourhoods families pick
In Dubai, school families cluster in Arabian Ranches, Dubai Hills Estate, Jumeirah, Mirdif, The Springs and Al Barsha. School-bus routes are dense and a four-bedroom villa with a garden runs USD 4,000 to 6,500 per month. In Munich, families weighing international school provision live in Bogenhausen, Grunwald, Solln and the leafy villages of Starnberger See out near Munich International School. A four-bedroom house in those catchments runs EUR 3,500 to 7,000 per month, with city flats considerably cheaper.
Lifestyle and climate
Dubai sells space, sunshine and disposable income, with hot summers that confine family life indoors from June to early September. The flip side is winter, when outdoor sport and beach weekends define the calendar. Munich offers cool clean air, Alpine weekends and one of Europe's safest urban environments, but pays for it in tax and a winter that runs five months long. Dubai wins on disposable income and weather; Munich wins on healthcare, walkability and proximity to the Alps and central Europe.
Verdict: who picks which city
Choose Dubai for tax-free income, villa space and a much lower all-in cost across school fees and housing. Choose Munich for safety, healthcare and a long-term European base, especially if your children will pick up German. Most families we work with run both cities through the school finder quiz before committing, because the right answer often turns on a child's current curriculum and the willingness to learn German.
Frequently asked questions
Is Dubai or Munich cheaper for international school families in 2026?
Dubai is cheaper on schools, fuel and disposable spending. Munich is cheaper on healthcare and groceries, and the state Gymnasium is nominally free if you can use it. Numbeo puts Munich's cost of living roughly on par with Dubai before tax.
Which city has better international schools?
Dubai has more schools, more curriculum choice and shorter waiting lists. Munich has fewer schools but the IB provision at BIS and MIS is academically very strong, and Bavarian Gymnasium offers a credible public alternative.
Is the family visa easier in Dubai or Munich?
Dubai is easier. UAE Golden Visas and employer sponsorship cover the whole family with minimal income tests. Munich uses the EU Blue Card, which is workable for skilled employees but slower.
Should we pick Dubai or Munich if we may move again in three years?
Dubai is faster to enter and exit. Munich suits families committed for at least five years, especially if children will sit the Abitur or pick up German.
Where do most international school families live in each city?
Dubai families pick Arabian Ranches, Dubai Hills, Jumeirah, The Springs and Mirdif. Munich families pick Bogenhausen, Grunwald, Solln and the Starnberger See villages near MIS.
