Zurich is one of the highest cost cities in the world for relocating families, but offers an exceptional IB and British curriculum bench with very high Diploma pass rates. Lisbon delivers a comparable IB and British offer at roughly half the price, with sun, sea and the D7 visa pathway, although senior pathway depth is shallower than Zurich.

Schools landscape side by side

Zurich's market is led by Zurich International School (ZIS, four campuses) and Inter-Community School Zurich (ICS). The Swiss International School Zurich, Lakeside School and SIS Zurich round out the bench. ZIS and ICS both run waiting lists in Years 1, 7 and 12 most years. Apply at least a full term ahead, ideally two.

Lisbon's bench has expanded sharply since 2020. The historic flagship is St Julian's School in Carcavelos (British IGCSE plus IB Diploma). The American flag is carried by Carlucci American International School. TASIS Portugal (Sintra) opened in 2021. The British School of Lisbon, IPS Cascais British International School, Park International and PaRK International round out the choice. Most schools admit qualified families within six to ten weeks. Fees and value for money

Zurich International School publishes 2026 to 2027 fees of CHF 28,000 in early years, CHF 33,000 to 37,000 in primary and CHF 41,000 to 47,000 in secondary, with a one-off CHF 5,000 infrastructure contribution. Inter-Community School Zurich runs CHF 27,000 to 46,000 plus a CHF 5,000 to 7,000 capital levy. Lunch, sport and ski camp add 10 to 20 percent. Most relocating families budget CHF 45,000 to CHF 55,000 per child all in.

St Julian's publishes 2025 to 2026 fees of EUR 13,100 in primary up to EUR 21,400 in IB Diploma, with a EUR 4,000 first-year enrolment. Carlucci American runs EUR 16,000 to 22,000. TASIS Portugal runs EUR 19,500 to 27,500. IPS Cascais and PaRK run EUR 11,400 to EUR 19,800. Most relocating families budget EUR 16,000 to EUR 25,000 per child all in. Curriculum availability

Zurich is IB-dominant at ZIS and ICS, with British IGCSE and A Level at SIS and Lakeside, plus Swiss matura at local cantonal schools. Lisbon mirrors the British and IB split, with St Julian's offering both IGCSE and the IB Diploma, TASIS running American with IB option, and Park International running British. For deep dives see the British curriculum hub, IB curriculum hub and American curriculum hub.

Neighbourhoods families pick

In Zurich, families pick the lake-side communes of Kusnacht, Zumikon, Erlenbach and Zollikon for ZIS Adliswil, and Wadenswil or Horgen for ICS. A 4-bedroom house on the gold coast easily runs CHF 8,500 to CHF 14,000 per month. In Lisbon, international families cluster in Carcavelos and Parede for St Julian's, Cascais and Estoril for the coastal lifestyle, and Sintra for TASIS. A 4-bedroom villa in Cascais or Estoril runs EUR 3,500 to EUR 6,500 per month.

Lifestyle and climate

Zurich is cool and clean, with full four seasons, world-class winter sports within an hour, and one of the lowest crime rates of any large city. Public transport runs to the minute and university outcomes are world-class. Lisbon is the sunnier and more relaxed lifestyle, with 290 sunshine days a year, an Atlantic coastline of surf beaches within 20 minutes of Cascais, and the same European time zone as London for business hours. Healthcare is solid, if less polished than Switzerland.

Verdict: who picks which city

Choose Zurich if safety, academic depth and IB outcomes matter most, your role can absorb the housing and fee premium, and you want a quiet, predictable family life inside Europe's most reliable civic system. Choose Lisbon if sunshine, surf and a half-price equivalent IB offer matter more than the very top of the league table, and your role is flexible (digital nomad, EU role, remote senior). Run both cities through the cost calculator before committing. The five year delta typically runs EUR 200,000 to EUR 350,000 in Lisbon's favour.

Frequently asked questions

Is Zurich or Lisbon cheaper for international school families in 2026?

Lisbon is dramatically cheaper across schools, housing, food and lifestyle. Zurich sits about 55 to 60 percent above Lisbon on cost of living, and Zurich's top-tier school fees alone are roughly double Lisbon's equivalent.

Which city has better international schools?

Zurich has the deeper Tier 1 bench (ZIS, ICS) with very high stability and IB Diploma outcomes. Lisbon's St Julian's, Carlucci and TASIS are credible IB providers, but the senior pathway depth is shallower than Zurich.

Is the family visa easier in Zurich or Lisbon?

Lisbon is significantly easier for non-EU families. Portugal's D7 (passive income), D8 (digital nomad) and standard residency routes are well established. Switzerland's B or C permit is straightforward for EU and EFTA nationals but stricter for third country applicants.

Can I get a place at St Julian's or ZIS for a mid-year start?

Both run waiting lists at popular intake years. St Julian's typically responds in eight to twelve weeks. ZIS Year 7 and Year 12 are the tightest, with one to three term lead times.

Where do most international school families live in each city?

Zurich families pick Kusnacht, Zumikon, Erlenbach, Zollikon, Wadenswil and Horgen. Lisbon families pick Carcavelos, Cascais, Estoril and Sintra.
