Primary fee range at a glance
Beijing hosts the historical anchor international schools of mainland China. The Western Academy of Beijing and the International School of Beijing are among Asia's longest-established. As in Shanghai, the foreign-passport rule shapes the shortlist: the premium international schools admit only non-PRC passport holders, while bilingual privates serve local and mixed families, and embassy schools are restricted to specific nationalities. Primary tuition sits at the lower end of each band below, tied to our Beijing fees report.

What drives the cost
Beijing primary fees are driven by the premium positioning of the long-established international schools that serve the diplomatic and corporate community. The Western Academy of Beijing and the International School of Beijing carry decades of reputation, international staffing and full IB continuum programmes, and they set the ceiling that newer schools such as Dulwich Beijing price beneath. Embassy and nationality-restricted schools sit at or just below premium but are open only to specific passport holders.
The second driver is the bilingual segment, where Chinese international privates serve local and mixed families at materially lower fees. As in Shanghai, the foreign-passport rule does as much as price to determine which schools a given family can actually consider. Beijing runs a little cheaper than Shanghai at the top, with the cost-of-living differential favouring Beijing on housing and transport.

Hidden costs beyond tuition
Total cost of a primary place adds 10 to 15% to headline tuition. Transport is the largest extra: Beijing is spread out and the school bus runs RMB 25,000 to 45,000 a year. Lunch adds RMB 8,000 to 15,000. Uniform is RMB 4,000 to 8,000, and from upper primary the device programme adds RMB 8,000 to 18,000. Registration and re-registration of RMB 4,000 to 12,000 recurs annually at many schools. Exam entries do not bite at primary but become a factor in the IGCSE and IB years later on.
