The nursery and preschool fee range in Berlin
German early years split into the Kita or Kindergarten stage (roughly ages three to six) before school proper begins. Expat families have three routes. The state-subsidised Kita system charges parents very little, with fees income-related and often near zero for the core hours. The free Staatliche Europa-Schule Berlin (SESB) network delivers bilingual education from Year 1. And the private international schools charge early-years tuition broadly in line with their wider tier: roughly USD 6,500 to USD 12,000 at the mid tier, USD 12,000 to USD 19,500 upper-mid, and USD 19,500 to USD 28,500 at premium schools such as Berlin Brandenburg International School, Berlin International School and Berlin Cosmopolitan School.
For the whole-school context, including the SESB option, see our Berlin international school fees guide.

What drives the cost
Berlin's early-years cost is driven first by which system you choose. the subsidised Kita and free SESB routes are a fraction of private international tuition, so the decision matters far more than the school within a tier. Second, medium and continuity: families who want English-medium provision that flows into an international primary pay the private premium. Third, demand for English-German SESB places exceeds supply, which pushes some families toward the fee-paying schools by default. Within the private sector, full-day, low-ratio programmes cost more than part-day Kita-style provision.
Hidden costs beyond tuition
Private international schools add roughly 10 to 15 per cent on top of tuition: enrolment or registration (EUR 600 to 1,500), materials and activities, lunch, and occasional building-fund contributions. School transport is less universal than in Gulf or Asian cities because Berlin's public transport is strong and many families live near their chosen school. The subsidised Kita route carries its own modest catering and materials charges but no meaningful tuition. Always confirm whether a Kita place is income-assessed in your case.

At private international schools, banded early-years tuition runs from roughly USD 6,500 to USD 28,500 a year. The state-subsidised Kita and free SESB routes cost a fraction of this. Figures are 2026 bands; confirm exact fees with each school.
Berlin's Kita system is heavily subsidised and the core hours are often free or close to it, with any parental contribution income-related. It is German-medium, so it suits families comfortable with immersion. Check your eligibility and the catering charges with the individual Kita.
The Staatliche Europa-Schule Berlin is a free state bilingual network covering nine language combinations from Year 1 to Abitur. Demand for English-German places exceeds supply, so apply early. It is the strongest low-cost bilingual route in Berlin.
At private international schools, early-years tuition usually sits at or just below primary fees. The far larger saving comes from choosing the subsidised Kita or free SESB route rather than a private international school.
