The nursery and preschool fee range in Hong Kong
Most expat families in Hong Kong meet international-school fees from kindergarten level (K1 to K2, roughly ages three to five), often after a year or two in a standalone pre-nursery. Early-years tuition broadly tracks the school's wider fee tier. At value and mid-tier providers, including some English Schools Foundation (ESF) kindergartens and Direct Subsidy Scheme bilingual options, expect roughly USD 9,000 to USD 23,000 a year. At premium through-schools such as Hong Kong International School or German Swiss International School, full-day early-years places run from around USD 23,000 to USD 30,000 and above.
The figures move with session length. Half-day nursery is materially cheaper than a full-day kindergarten place, and standalone kindergartens generally undercut the early-years arm of a premium through-school. For the full whole-school context see our Hong Kong international school fees guide.

What drives the cost
Three things move Hong Kong nursery and preschool fees more than anything else. First, the through-school premium: an early-years place inside a premium kindergarten-to-eighteen campus is priced for the brand and the facilities, not the toddler. Second, the debenture or capital contribution. many premium schools require a one-time, refundable capital sum (individual debentures from around HKD 500,000, corporate debentures far higher) to secure a place, and some apply this from kindergarten. Third, session length and ratios: full-day, low-ratio programmes cost more than half-day sessions, and English-medium provision sits above bilingual local kindergartens.
Hidden costs beyond tuition
Beyond tuition, total cost typically adds 12 to 18 per cent. For the early years the largest line items are the school bus (HKD 18,000 to 32,000 a year, often unavoidable given Hong Kong's geography), uniform (HKD 3,500 to 7,000), and enrolment or annual capital-levy contributions where a full debenture is not charged. Lunch is usually included or modest. The debenture itself is the outlier: refundable in principle, but it locks up family or employer capital for the whole time your child holds the place.

Banded annual tuition runs from roughly USD 9,000 at value providers to USD 30,000 and above at premium through-schools, with most full-day kindergarten places sitting between USD 16,500 and USD 30,500. Half-day nursery sessions cost less. Figures are 2026 bands; confirm exact fees with each school.
Many premium through-schools require a one-time, refundable debenture or capital contribution to secure a place, sometimes from kindergarten level. Individual debentures start from around HKD 500,000 and corporate debentures are higher. Standalone kindergartens and value providers usually do not.
Full-day early-years tuition at a premium through-school tends to track close to its primary fees, so the saving is modest. The clearer savings come from choosing a standalone kindergarten or a half-day session rather than a full-day place at a top through-school.
Expect the school bus (HKD 18,000 to 32,000), uniform (HKD 3,500 to 7,000), and any enrolment or capital-levy contribution. These add roughly 12 to 18 per cent on top of tuition before any debenture.
