Moving to Kuwait with children

Kuwait has a mature international school market built around oil-industry families. The Ministry of Education accredits and regulates international schools tightly, fees are predictable, and the British curriculum dominates.

The school landscape

The American School of Kuwait, the British School of Kuwait, the English School Kuwait, Universal American School, Gulf English School and Bayan Bilingual School lead the international market. Fees range from KWD 3,000 to 6,500 per year for senior years (roughly USD 10,000 to 21,000).

Neighbourhoods

Salwa, Salmiya and Mishref host the largest expat school catchments. Most expat families live in apartments and villas within 20 minutes of their chosen school.

Cultural context

Kuwait is more conservative than most Gulf expat destinations. Alcohol is prohibited. Weekend is Friday-Saturday. For families coming from Dubai, the lifestyle adjustment is more material than the salary equivalence suggests.

Costs and timeline

School applications open in autumn for September entry. Housing is moderate (KWD 1,000 to 2,000 per month for a family villa or apartment), often partly covered by employer relocation packages.
