Malaysia and specifically Kuala Lumpur offers one of the strongest value propositions in Asia for relocating families. International school fees sit at roughly half the Singapore equivalent for comparable quality.
The school landscape
Kuala Lumpur hosts British (Alice Smith, Garden International, Marlborough College Malaysia, Epsom College), American (International School of KL), IB (Mont'Kiara, IGB International School) options. Fees in MYR-equivalent terms sit at USD 12,000 to 25,000 per year.
Why KL
Cost-to-quality ratio. The premium British curriculum schools in KL deliver IGCSE and A-Level outcomes comparable to Singapore at half the fees. Housing is similarly cheaper. The trade-off is air quality during haze season and the daily traffic.
Neighbourhoods
Mont'Kiara and Sri Hartamas host the largest expat school clusters. Damansara Heights and Bangsar serve families with city-centre orientations.
Visa
MM2H rules have changed materially since 2021 with much higher financial thresholds. Most expat families relocate via employment visas through their employer.
