Moving to Portugal with children

Portugal has become one of the most-considered European destinations for relocating families since 2018, driven by the Golden Visa, the D7 retiree visa, the NHR tax regime, and a sustained expat-friendly policy environment.

The school landscape

Lisbon and Cascais host roughly 20 credible international schools including St Julian's, St Dominic's, the International School of Lisbon, Carlucci American International School, the Lycée Français, the German School. Fees range from EUR 14,000 to 30,000 per year for senior years.

Neighbourhoods

The Cascais-Estoril coastal strip is the established expat heartland, served by St Julian's and several other schools. Lisbon's western suburbs (Restelo, Belem) host city-based international schools.

Tax

The NHR programme has been substantively scaled back since 2024. New arrivals after 2024 are generally not eligible for the original NHR benefits. The D7 visa remains attractive for families with passive income.

Waitlists

School waitlists, particularly at St Julian's, have tightened. Year 7 entry at premium schools is often closed two years out. Apply early.
