The Netherlands offers an unusually open educational system to relocating families: state schools are free, Dutch-medium international primary schools bridge between Dutch and international curricula, and the IB Diploma is well established.
The school landscape
Three options. Free Dutch state schools, taught in Dutch with EAL support. DAIS schools (Dutch International Primary Schools): state-subsidised, low-fee, English at primary. Full-fee international schools (British School of the Netherlands, International School of The Hague, the International School Amsterdam).
Eligibility
DAIS schools have eligibility rules requiring expat status (typically employer-sponsored, on a non-permanent residence basis). Once acquired permanent residence, families typically transition to state schools or full international schools.
The 30% ruling
The 30% ruling allows foreign-earned employees to receive 30% of gross salary tax-free for up to five years. Since 2024 the ruling has been tightened.
Where to live
Amsterdam, The Hague, Rotterdam, Eindhoven, Utrecht and Wassenaar all have international school options. Wassenaar specifically serves the British School and the diplomatic community at The Hague.
