The Muscat IB landscape in 2026

Muscat does not have a deep IB market. Four schools currently offer the IB Diploma Programme to a credible cohort, and only three of those run the full IB continuum from Primary Years through to Diploma. By comparison, Dubai has more than 20 IB schools and Doha has around eight. For expat families choosing Muscat with the IB Diploma in mind, that narrower field actually simplifies the decision. The reputational gap between the leading provider, the American British Academy, and the most recently authorised entrants is wider than parents arriving from the UAE expect.

The four schools that matter in 2026 are the American British Academy, The American International School Muscat, The Sultan's School and Azzan Bin Qais International School. Each comes with a different curriculum mix, a different fee level and a different cohort profile. Some run the full IB Primary Years and Middle Years programmes alongside the Diploma; others offer the Diploma only and feed it through IGCSE or American high school courses. The headline reason families opt for IB in Muscat is the universal recognition the Diploma carries at universities in the UK, the US, Canada, Australia and continental Europe, which suits the highly mobile expat profile of the city. Our IB curriculum hub explains the structure in more detail, and the Muscat city guide sets the broader schooling picture.

The four credible IB providers, ranked

Our 2026 ranking weights five factors: most recent published Diploma average and pass rate, faculty stability and recruitment depth, breadth of subject offer at Higher and Standard Level, university destinations across the past three years, and overall school infrastructure including library, laboratory and creative arts provision. We do not weight fees in the ranking itself; we treat them separately. The order below reflects what we believe a relocating family with a Diploma-bound child should consider, on average. Specific subject combinations or family circumstances may push the order around.

1

American British Academy (ABA)

IGCSE plus IB DPFull continuumOMR 4,200 to 8,100Al Ghubrah

The strongest IB school in Muscat in 2026. ABA runs the full Primary Years, Middle Years and Diploma programmes. Recent Diploma averages have sat comfortably above the global mean, with strong representation in Higher Level sciences, mathematics and English. A long-tenured senior leadership team and stable expat-heavy faculty are the principal reasons for the consistency. Worth the premium for Diploma-bound families.

2

The American International School Muscat (TAISM)

American plus IB DPDiploma onlyOMR 4,500 to 8,400Al Ghubrah North

The strongest American-curriculum school in Muscat, with an IB Diploma layered onto the high school. The Diploma cohort is smaller than ABA's but the school's overall infrastructure, including its science and arts provision, is exceptional. Particularly suited to American expat families anticipating university back in the United States, where the IB Diploma sits comfortably alongside Advanced Placement in the admissions calculus.

3

The Sultan's School

Bilingual, IGCSE plus IB DPDiploma onlyOMR 3,800 to 7,200Seeb

A unique bilingual model, founded in 1977 and a national institution in Oman. The Sultan's School delivers IGCSE and the IB Diploma alongside compulsory Arabic and Islamic studies, with strong outcomes from a cohort that combines Omani national students and a smaller expat enrolment. Worth considering for families wanting genuine Arabic immersion alongside an internationally recognised qualification.

4

Azzan Bin Qais International School

British plus IB DPDiploma onlyOMR 2,500 to 5,300Al Hail

The value-tier IB option. Azzan Bin Qais runs a British curriculum through to IGCSE and offers the IB Diploma in sixth form. The Diploma cohort is smaller and the subject offer is narrower than at ABA or TAISM, but academic outcomes have been creditable. Suited to families wanting the Diploma at a fee point materially below the premium tier, or those whose first-choice schools are full at the year group they need.

American British Academy (ABA)

The American British Academy sits in Al Ghubrah and has been Muscat's flagship IB school for two decades. It is authorised for the IB Primary Years Programme from age 3 through age 11, the IB Middle Years Programme from age 11 through 16 with the IGCSE option in Years 10 and 11, and the IB Diploma in Years 12 and 13. The school is co-educational throughout, runs to roughly 950 students from over 65 nationalities, and operates a single campus with a covered sports hall, two libraries, three science laboratories and a 350-seat auditorium. Faculty turnover has been notably lower than the Muscat average, which matters for IB schools where Diploma teaching depth depends on continuity.

Recent Diploma cohorts have averaged in the 33 to 36 point range, with a pass rate above the global benchmark. Strongest Higher Level subjects are mathematics, biology, English and economics. University destinations include the University of Toronto, McGill, several Russell Group universities, and a range of US colleges. Application support runs through a dedicated college counselling team.

The American International School Muscat (TAISM)

TAISM is the only WASC-accredited American school in Muscat and the only school in the city that offers the IB Diploma layered onto an American high school curriculum. The school sits in Al Ghubrah North on a substantial campus and educates around 700 students from kindergarten to Grade 12. The IB Diploma is offered in Grades 11 and 12 alongside the American high school diploma, with Advanced Placement also available. Around a quarter of the senior cohort typically opts for the full IB Diploma; the remainder pursue Advanced Placement courses with the American diploma.

The IB cohort at TAISM is smaller than at ABA, but Diploma outcomes have been competitive. The school's infrastructure is the most impressive in Muscat for senior phase teaching: separate science labs for biology, chemistry and physics, a dedicated maker space, two libraries with strong digital and physical holdings, and an arts centre that houses a 250-seat theatre. University destinations skew American, as the school's profile would suggest, with strong representation at top 50 US universities and at the major Canadian universities. UK destinations are typically Russell Group with one or two Oxbridge applications most years. Worth highlighting that TAISM has a longer waiting list than ABA at most year groups, particularly in elementary, which is something families need to plan around.

The Sultan's School

The Sultan's School is a national institution in Oman and a distinctive choice in the Muscat IB landscape. Founded under royal patronage in 1977, the school sits on a 56 hectare campus in Seeb and educates around 1,400 students from Kindergarten to Grade 12. The bilingual model teaches roughly half the timetable in Arabic and half in English, with compulsory Arabic and Islamic studies for all students through the senior years. The IB Diploma is offered alongside IGCSE, with a smaller Diploma cohort each year that has typically posted average points in the low 30s.

The school is genuinely bilingual rather than English-medium with Arabic added. For expat families committing to several years in Muscat, it offers Arabic acquisition that no other school in the city can match. The downside is heavier academic load in junior years and a predominantly Omani national cohort. Visit, meet senior leadership and speak to existing expat families. Admission is competitive at all year groups.

Azzan Bin Qais International School

Azzan Bin Qais is part of the ABQ Education Group and offers a British curriculum through IGCSE with the IB Diploma in sixth form. The school sits in Al Hail and educates around 900 students from foundation through Year 13. The IB Diploma was introduced relatively recently and the cohort remains small, typically 25 to 40 students per year. Subject offer is narrower than at ABA or TAISM, with most students taking three Higher Level subjects from English, mathematics, biology, business management and history, alongside three Standard Level subjects. Recent average points have sat in the high 20s to low 30s.

The principal reason to consider Azzan Bin Qais is fee. Premium IB tuition at ABA, TAISM or The Sultan's School runs OMR 7,200 to OMR 8,400 in senior years; Azzan Bin Qais sits at OMR 4,900 to OMR 5,300, a 35 per cent discount. For families with two or three IB-bound children, that gap is material. The school runs a smaller subject offering, so check Higher Level combinations carefully.

Diploma points, university outcomes and the honest picture

Diploma averages and pass rates in Muscat have trended upward over the past five years, with ABA consistently above the global benchmark and TAISM close to it. The Sultan's School and Azzan Bin Qais have produced more variable cohorts, in part because their Diploma intakes are smaller and a single weak result can move the average meaningfully. Parents should ask each school for the most recent three years of average points, pass rate, percentage achieving 40 points or higher, and the distribution of scores in their child's likely Higher Level subjects. Schools sometimes prefer to discuss bilingual diploma rates or core component completion in the same conversation, which are also useful indicators.

University destinations are the more honest indicator for many families. Ask each school for the destination list for the most recent three cohorts, with destination universities, course taken and any scholarships awarded. Differences between schools that look similar on average points emerge clearly in the destination data. ABA and TAISM both publish credible destination summaries; The Sultan's School and Azzan Bin Qais are less consistent on publication and will share data at parent interview. The Dubai IB picture sets a useful comparison if your move is between Gulf cities.

IB fees in Muscat compared

Muscat IB fees sit at the low end of the Gulf range. The 2026 to 2027 senior year tuition picture across the four credible providers, with all-in costs estimated at tuition plus 22 per cent loading for capital fees, transport and the standard extras, is as follows.

Choosing between the four

For most relocating families with a Diploma-bound child, the working decision is between ABA and TAISM. The choice between them tends to come down to curriculum philosophy and university destination. Families with a US college destination in mind and a preference for breadth across high school years usually find TAISM the better fit. Families with a UK, Canadian or European destination in mind and a preference for the IB structure throughout secondary phase usually find ABA the better fit. The Sultan's School is the right choice for families committing long term to Muscat and wanting genuine Arabic immersion. Azzan Bin Qais is the right choice for families balancing IB ambition against a tighter fee envelope.

Whichever school sits at the top of your list, apply early. Senior year IB places at ABA and TAISM are often full by February for the following September entry, with limited movement before the start of the new academic year. The Sultan's School operates on a different cycle aligned with the Omani academic calendar and should be approached early in the relocation. Azzan Bin Qais typically has rolling availability but loses headcount to ABA and TAISM through the year, so a place open in May may not be open in August. Plan to visit at least two of the four before deciding, and read our companion piece on Muscat British and IB options together if you are still narrowing curriculum.
