The Seoul IB landscape

Seoul hosts a deep diplomatic, US military, embassy and corporate expat community. The IB Diploma cluster is concentrated in premium American and IB-foundation schools. Seoul International School (SIS) is the long-established premier American IB school. Korea International School (KIS) Seoul delivers IB Continuum. Dwight Seoul and GSIS Seoul (German-Swiss International School) round out the credible IB tier. Note: Seoul Foreign School (SFS) is highly regarded but delivers AP and dual-diploma rather than IB. Korean nationality restrictions apply to most international schools.

What didn't make the list

Seoul Foreign School (SFS) is the long-established premier British/American hybrid school but currently delivers AP and dual-diploma rather than IB Diploma at scale. For SFS-interested families, AP pathway is preferred. British School Seoul (BSS) delivers IGCSE/A-Level rather than IB. For British-curriculum families, BSS is the leading option.

The Korean nationality question

Most Seoul international schools (SIS, KIS Seoul, Dwight Seoul, GSIS) restrict admissions to families with at least one non-Korean passport-holder parent OR to children with at least three years of foreign residency. This is enforced strictly. Korean nationals seeking international curriculum education typically attend schools that explicitly accept Korean nationals (some bilingual schools, certain Christian-foundation schools) or international branch campuses overseas (Jeju International School Hub).

IB vs. American AP in Seoul

SIS uniquely offers AP, IB and US diploma at scale. SFS delivers AP without IB at scale. For US-bound students, AP is often more direct; for globally mobile students, IB Diploma travels universally. Many Seoul families take pragmatic decision based on university destination expectations.

Fee context

Premium IB places at SIS or KIS Seoul cost KRW 42-46 million per year (USD 30,000-33,000). Plus capital and registration fees. See our full Seoul school fees report.
