The 2026 Hong Kong school context
Hong Kong's international school sector has shifted dramatically since 2020. The post-pandemic outflow of expat families relieved pressure at top-tier schools through 2022 and 2023, but the inflow of mainland Chinese families and the family migration through Top Talent Pass (TTPS) and Quality Migrant Admission Scheme (QMAS) has refilled capacity by 2025 to 2026. Top-tier schools again have 12-month waitlists for popular year groups.
Three structural features shape the choice: the ESF (English Schools Foundation) network of 22 schools serving most middle-class expat families; the major non-ESF schools (HKIS, Chinese International School, Canadian International, German Swiss) anchoring premium tiers; and the debenture market, which adds substantial up-front costs at most non-ESF schools.
The 2026 top 10
Hong Kong International School (HKIS)
The benchmark American school in Hong Kong. K-12 American curriculum with strong AP programme. University destinations consistently include Ivy League, top liberal arts and Russell Group. Strong service-learning culture. Repulse Bay and Tai Tam campuses serve Southside catchment.
King George V School (ESF)
The senior school flagship of ESF. Strong IB Diploma cohort with consistent 36+ point averages. Strong UK university pipeline. Kowloon location serves families across Kowloon and Hong Kong Island via tunnels. The default ESF Tier 1 senior choice.
Chinese International School (CIS)
The strongest bilingual Chinese-English programme in Hong Kong. IB Diploma. Selective admissions. Outstanding university destinations across UK, US and Asia. Particularly strong for families committed to bilingual development.
Island School (ESF)
The other ESF senior flagship, on Hong Kong Island. Strong IB Diploma outcomes. Pokfulam location serves Mid-Levels and Western District catchment. Often easier enrolment than KGV for families on the Island side.
South Island School (ESF)
The third major ESF senior school. Aberdeen location serves Southside Hong Kong (Repulse Bay, Stanley, Aberdeen). Strong outcomes, slightly easier admissions than KGV historically. Good fit for Southside-resident families.
Discovery College (ESF)
ESF's K-12 IB school on Lantau. Strong IB outcomes. Discovery Bay catchment is loyal and family-friendly. The "village" school feel within the ESF network. Good fit for families who want lower density alongside strong academic outcomes.
Canadian International School of Hong Kong
The strongest Canadian-curriculum school in Asia. IB Diploma alongside Ontario credentials. Strong academic outcomes, balanced cohort. Particularly strong for families bound for Canadian universities or wanting bilingual French-English options.
German Swiss International School
The sole German-curriculum school in Hong Kong. Both German Abitur and IB Diploma streams. Selective admissions. The Peak location with stunning facilities. Particularly strong for German-speaking families and those wanting trilingual outcomes.
Sha Tin College (ESF)
The New Territories ESF senior school. Strong outcomes, slightly easier admissions than the Hong Kong Island ESF schools. Good fit for families considering New Territories housing for affordability. KCR connection makes commute manageable.
Harrow International School Hong Kong
UK Harrow School heritage. Strong A-Level outcomes despite being a younger campus (opened 2012). Boarding option available. Tuen Mun location is more remote but the campus and facilities are exceptional. Particularly suited to families wanting British boarding-style culture.
What didn't make the top 10
Several schools warrant consideration. French International School (FIS) for francophone families. Singapore International School Hong Kong for those drawn to the Singaporean curriculum. Stamford American School Hong Kong for AP / IB American option outside HKIS. Kellett School (British, two campuses) for primary years particularly. Australian International School Hong Kong for HSC pathway.
Fees and the debenture reality
Hong Kong's debenture system is the most distinctive fee feature in Asia. Many non-ESF schools require an interest-free loan to the school of HKD 500K to 5M (USD 64K to 640K) at admission, returnable when the child leaves. ESF schools do not require debentures, which is one major reason for their continued popularity. Plan for the debenture as a liquidity, not cost, item; include it in your move financial planning.
