The 2026 London school context
London has a deep three-layer international school market. First, the dedicated international schools (ASL, ACS, Southbank, Halcyon, ICS) serving primarily American and IB-bound expat families. Second, the UK independent day schools (Westminster, St Paul's, Latymer Upper, Highgate, Dwight London, North London Collegiate) where international families compete with UK families for places. Third, state schools and grammar schools, which remain free but require careful catchment-area logic.
The 2025 VAT introduction lifted private school fees by approximately 17 to 20% across the dedicated international sector. Those families who previously chose to pay London independent fees over going to international school are reassessing the maths. Some are switching to state schools in catchment, others to dedicated international schools at the now-reduced premium, others remain at independents and absorb the rise.

What didn't make the top 10
Two categories sit just outside. First, UK independent day schools that international families regularly consider: Westminster School, Latymer Upper, Highgate, North London Collegiate. These are exceptional schools but operate on UK admissions cycles (11+, 13+) with substantial entry-test preparation. Second, state and grammar schools: The Henrietta Barnett, St Marylebone CE, several others, are free but require precise catchment-area logic.
Fees and the post-VAT picture
Post-VAT (2025), London international school fees crossed GBP 40K (USD 50K) for tuition at top-tier schools. Add 25 to 30% for capital levies, transport, books, lunches and exam fees and the all-in number is GBP 50K to 64K (USD 63K to 80K) per child per year. London is now the third-most-expensive international school city in our 50-city dataset. See our 2026 fee report for the full city comparison.
Neighbourhoods that match these schools

Admissions reality
London international schools have generally moderate admissions cycles (apply 9 to 12 months ahead). UK independent schools require 11+ and 13+ entry test preparation often starting 2 years out. State school catchment logic shifts annually based on demand. Read our admissions timing guide for the full timeline.
