The Madrid context
Madrid has emerged as the largest beneficiary of Spain's Digital Nomad Visa programme, particularly for school-age families on US payroll. The city offers the deepest international school inventory in continental Europe, fees materially below London or Paris, and a residency pathway that converts to citizenship in 5 years. Read our Spain DNV piece for the full visa picture before reading the school list.
The 2026 top 10
American School of Madrid (ASM)
The premier American-curriculum school in Spain. AP and IB Diploma pathways. Strong US Ivy and top liberal-arts pipeline. Pozuelo location with strong housing catchment. The default for US-bound families.
King's College Madrid (Soto de Viñuelas)
UK British curriculum with strong A-Level outcomes. Russell Group destinations of 50%+ in recent years. Suburban location with school bus into central Madrid. Sister to King's College The British School (Chamartín) and others.
King's College The British School (Chamartín)
Central Madrid King's College campus. Strong British curriculum with credible A-Level outcomes. Particularly strong primary years. Easier commute than the Soto campus for central-Madrid families.
International College Spain (ICS)
The strongest pure-IB school in Madrid. PYP through DP. Strong cohort balance, IB Diploma scores consistently above 35 points. La Moraleja location is the premium expat residential hub.
British Council School Madrid
Strong bilingual British-Spanish provision under British Council operation. A-Level and Spanish Bachillerato pathways. Very strong for families wanting genuine bilingualism alongside British academic credentials.
Hastings School Madrid
Solid British curriculum with credible A-Level outcomes. Mirasierra location, good school-bus catchment. Smaller cohort than King's College but with focused academic culture.
St George's British International School
Newer British school (2010) with strong recent A-Level outcomes. Tres Cantos location, good for families in northern Madrid suburbs. Excellent value tier within Madrid's British curriculum sector.
Runnymede College
Established British school in La Moraleja. Strong A-Level outcomes, particularly UK university destinations. La Moraleja catchment, neighbouring ICS. Boutique cohort size with strong academic culture.
IES Madrid (International Education Services)
American curriculum at value tier. AP programme. Aravaca location works well for west-Madrid families. Good fit for American-curriculum families on tighter budgets than ASM.
Lycée Français de Madrid
The largest French school overseas. Pure French curriculum (Brevet, Baccalauréat). Materially lower fees than the British or American competition. Strong for francophone families and those wanting bilingual French-Spanish outcomes.
What didn't make the top 10
Several schools warrant consideration. SEK International School (multiple campuses). Brains International Schools. St Anne's International School. Highlands School Los Fresnos. Deutsche Schule Madrid for German-curriculum families. Numont School (boutique British, Conde de Orgaz). All credible for specific family circumstances.
Fees and the bilingual alternative
Madrid's international school fees (EUR 14K to 28K tuition) are materially below London, Paris or Geneva. Even with 25% loading for capital levies, transport, books and exam fees, the all-in number rarely exceeds EUR 35K (USD 38K) per child per year for Tier 1. Spanish concertados (semi-private bilingual schools at EUR 8K to 15K all-in) are an excellent middle-ground for DNV families committed to genuine integration.
