IB in Mumbai: the 2026 picture

The IB Diploma arrived in Mumbai through the American School of Bombay in the 1990s and has since spread across the city's premium private school market. In 2026, around a dozen Mumbai schools run the full Diploma; several offer the PYP and MYP alongside, providing the continuum from age three through to eighteen. The IB sits alongside the IGCSE plus A-Level pathway at several schools (Oberoi International, JBCN International, Aditya Birla World Academy) and competes directly with the ICSE and CBSE Indian national systems for the same families.

For families relocating to Mumbai from an IB system overseas, continuity of programme is the single strongest reason to choose an IB school. For families starting fresh in IB Diploma Year 1 from an Indian or international background, the choice between IB and a strong IGCSE plus A-Level alternative is more nuanced. Both pathways feed Indian and international universities; both produce strong outcomes when matched to the right student. The IB carries a slight edge for students applying to North American universities or to courses requiring documented breadth across humanities and sciences. See the IB curriculum hub for the programme structure.

The IB schools, one by one

1

American School of Bombay (ASB)

IB DP + American HSBKCINR 1.8M to 2.4M Grade 12Mumbai's flagship

The longest established and most internationally diverse IB school in Mumbai. ASB runs an American high school diploma alongside the IB Diploma, with around 60 to 80 Diploma candidates per year and recent averages of 35 to 37 points. The school's faculty stability, university destinations across the US, UK and Asia, and integration with the wider American international school network make it the default for many senior expat families.

2

Dhirubhai Ambani International School

IB PYP, MYP, DP + IGCSEBKCINR 1.4M to 1.9M Grade 12Full continuum

One of the strongest academic IB schools in India. Full continuum from PYP through DP, with DP cohorts of 70 to 110 candidates per year and recent averages consistently 36 to 39 points. Several candidates each year achieve 42 plus points. University destinations split across Ivy League, Oxbridge, top Indian institutes and Asian universities. Selective entry at every entry point and notable academic intensity.

IB DP + IGCSEPowaiINR 1.0M to 1.4M Grade 12Powai

Powai-based school with the IB Diploma offered as an alternative to A-Level or the Indian curricula. DP cohorts 15 to 30 per year, with averages 32 to 34 points. Strong fit for families based in Powai who want the option of the IB pathway without leaving the neighbourhood.

10

Cathedral and John Connon School (IB stream)

IB DP alongside ICSE plus ISCFortINR 800K to 1.1M Grade 12Heritage option

Mumbai's most established heritage private school with a growing IB Diploma cohort alongside its larger ICSE plus ISC pathway. DP candidates 15 to 30 per year, with averages 33 to 35 points. The school's depth and tradition appeal to families with deep Mumbai ties; the IB option is comparatively new and small.

IB versus IGCSE plus A-Level

For families starting fresh in Mumbai senior secondary, the IB versus A-Level choice is the biggest single curriculum decision. Both pathways feed Indian and international universities; both produce strong outcomes when well matched. The practical differences:

  • Breadth versus depth. IB requires six subjects spread across all major disciplines; A-Level allows narrower specialisation in three or four subjects of the student's choice. Strong all-rounders thrive in the IB; deep specialists in one or two areas often prefer A-Level.
  • Workload. The IB Diploma carries the Extended Essay, Theory of Knowledge and the CAS programme on top of six subjects. A-Level workload is smaller in compulsory components. IB workload is genuinely heavier across the two years.
  • University portability. Both are recognised globally. The IB carries a slight edge for North American applications, particularly to liberal arts colleges where breadth is explicitly valued. A-Level remains the strongest signal for Oxbridge and most UK specialist degrees.
  • Indian university access. Both are accepted for IIT, NIT and most Indian private universities, though some Indian engineering paths still privilege CBSE or ISC. Worth checking specific course requirements.

For families relocating from an IB system overseas, continuity argues strongly for an IB school. For families targeting specific UK or Indian engineering or medicine paths, A-Level or the Indian curricula may be the safer choice. See IB versus AP university outcomes for the broader framework.

The Indian IB cohort averages clearly above the global mean of 31 points, with the strongest Mumbai schools sitting in the top international quartile. The more meaningful number for university application is the share of cohort posting 38 plus points, which is the threshold many selective international universities use as a baseline. Dhirubhai Ambani consistently produces a meaningful share of candidates at 40 plus; ASB and BD Somani reliably produce candidates in the 38 to 42 range.

Fees and the all-in IB cost

IB sixth form fees in Mumbai sit at the upper end of each school's fee schedule, with Grade 11 and Grade 12 tuition typically 10 to 15 per cent higher than Grade 10. External IB Diploma examination fees (around INR 75,000 to INR 130,000 in Year 12) are usually added to the school fee. Extended Essay supervision and Theory of Knowledge tuition are typically included.

Realistic all-in IB sixth-form cost at Dhirubhai Ambani or ASB runs INR 1.9 million to INR 2.5 million per year. At BD Somani or Oberoi International, INR 1.4 million to INR 1.8 million. At JBCN or Singapore International, INR 1.1 million to INR 1.5 million. The full fee picture sits in our international school fees in Mumbai piece, and you can model your specific shortlist via the fees explorer.

Admissions and timing

Entry into Mumbai IB schools follows the wider Mumbai private school admissions cycle. Premium tier (Dhirubhai Ambani, ASB, BD Somani) require applications 6 to 12 months ahead of intended entry for popular year groups (Grade 1, Grade 6 and IB Diploma Year 1 are the most competitive entry points). Mid-tier IB schools accept rolling applications closer to entry, often with three to six months notice. External entry into Grade 11 IB cohorts is possible at most schools but the place is rarely guaranteed; candidates are usually invited for an academic assessment and interview.

For families moving to Mumbai with a child entering the IB years, apply at least 12 months ahead and ask the school directly about subject availability at HL. Popular HL combinations (Maths AA HL, Physics HL, Chemistry HL) can fill quickly and subject choice constraints sometimes determine which school works for a particular child. For the broader admissions framework see best international schools in Mumbai and admissions timing by city.

IB continuum schools: PYP, MYP and DP together

The full IB continuum (PYP, MYP, DP across all year groups) is rare in India outside Mumbai. Three Mumbai schools run all three programmes: Dhirubhai Ambani International School, Ecole Mondiale World School and JBCN International School. Continuum schools offer a structurally consistent inquiry-led pedagogy from age three through eighteen, which families relocating from IB-continuum schools overseas value highly.

The trade-off worth understanding: continuum primary years involve different pedagogy from traditional Indian primary education. Inquiry units, transdisciplinary themes and student-led learning sit at the centre of the PYP, where Indian primary norms often emphasise more direct instruction and graded testing. Parents accustomed to the latter sometimes find the PYP harder to read; outcomes are not summarised in test scores in the same way. The MYP middle years are a closer fit to Indian middle school expectations but still emphasise inter-subject connections and personal projects more than CBSE or ICSE.

The bilingual diploma in Mumbai

Mumbai IB schools produce a meaningful share of bilingual diplomas, partly through the city's multilingual community and partly through the IB's recognition of Hindi, Marathi and other languages as Language A subjects. Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Gujarati and French are commonly offered as Language A subjects at Mumbai IB schools, alongside English. Dhirubhai Ambani, ASB and Ecole Mondiale all have routes to the bilingual diploma in their typical year. For multilingual families, the bilingual diploma is an additional university-application asset and a meaningful recognition of language depth.
