Why Geneva fees are different
Geneva has the world's deepest concentration of UN, NGO and INGO offices, plus a substantial private banking and commodity trading sector. Demand for English-medium international education is enormous relative to school capacity. Switzerland has a high cost of operation (Geneva canton minimum wage, premium real estate, deep faculty pools demanding Swiss-level salaries). The result: Europe's most expensive day school fees, well ahead of London post-VAT.

The hidden extras
Geneva schools charge somewhat transparently but extras still add 10-15%. Largest line items: registration/enrolment (CHF 1,500-3,500 one-time), school bus (CHF 4,000-7,500. Switzerland's expensive transport tells in school costs), cantine/lunch (CHF 1,800-3,000), uniform where required (CHF 600-1,400), trips and ski weeks (CHF 1,800-4,500. typical of Switzerland), exam entries (CHF 800-1,800 in IGCSE/IB years), books and materials (CHF 250-650).
Year-on-year fee inflation
Geneva school fees rose 3.6% on average across 2025-26, lower than the European average partly due to the strong Swiss franc. In USD terms the effect on non-CHF earners was much higher (4-7% in dollars depending on currency). Budget 3.5-4% annual fee inflation in CHF; 4-7% in USD given currency dynamics.
Geneva vs. London: a working comparison
A premium IB Diploma place at the International School of Geneva costs CHF 42,000-48,000 (USD 47,500-54,500). The post-VAT London equivalent at top independents is GBP 33,000-44,000 (USD 41,000-55,000). On USD basis, Geneva and post-VAT London are now comparable; pre-VAT, Geneva was meaningfully more expensive. The cost-of-living differential makes Geneva more expensive overall once housing and tax are factored in.
The public school option
Geneva canton public schools are free to residents (including non-Swiss residents with valid permits). Most teaching is in French, with German and Italian options in some communes. ECG (Ecole de Culture Generale) and various lycees offer credible academic outcomes leading to the Swiss Maturite. For families with longer Geneva time horizons (4+ years) and willingness to develop strong French in their children, public school is a serious option that meaningfully reduces total cost-of-place.
Sibling discounts
Most Geneva schools offer 5-10% sibling discounts; the International School of Geneva offers a sliding scale. See our sibling discount table for 2026 figures.
Currency exposure
The Swiss franc has been one of the strongest currencies globally over the past decade. CHF-denominated fees represent significant currency risk for non-CHF earners. UN and INGO families paid in CHF (via UN system or NGO) face no domestic currency risk; private sector families paid in USD/EUR/GBP carry full risk.
