The London fee landscape after VAT
The single biggest change in London school fees over the past 18 months has been the application of VAT on private school tuition from 1 January 2025. The 20% headline rate has translated into 12-16% net fee increases for most families after schools absorbed some via efficiency, drew on reserves, or reduced fee margins. That has compressed the value gap between mid-tier and premium independents, and pushed a meaningful tail of families to consider grammar schools or strong state secondaries.
2026 fee tiers (London day schools)
| Tier | Annual fee range (GBP) | Annual fee range (USD) | Typical schools |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium | GBP 33,000 - 44,000 | USD 41,000 - 55,000 | Westminster, St Paul's, City of London, KCS Wimbledon, Highgate, Latymer Upper |
| Upper-mid | GBP 26,000 - 33,000 | USD 32,500 - 41,000 | Dulwich College, Alleyn's, JAGS, Whitgift, Trinity, Forest, Mill Hill |
| Mid | GBP 20,000 - 26,000 | USD 25,000 - 32,500 | Smaller independents and various international schools (ACS, ICS, Southbank) |
| Pure international | GBP 28,000 - 38,000 | USD 35,000 - 47,500 | ICS London, Southbank International, ASL American School, ACS Cobham/Egham/Hillingdon |
What changed with VAT
Before January 2025 a typical premium London day school charged about GBP 27,000 per year (no VAT). After VAT and partial absorption, the same school now charges around GBP 33,000-35,000. a real-terms 22-30% increase for most families. Schools used several tactics: (a) genuine cost reduction in non-teaching areas, (b) freezing or reducing teacher compensation in the marketplace where possible, (c) increased external commercial revenue, and (d) drawing on reserves. The full pass-through will likely be visible by 2027 fees, when reserves run thinner.
Hidden extras
London independent and international schools tend to charge more transparently than overseas equivalents but extras still add 8-14% to the headline fee. Largest line items: registration fees (GBP 250-500 per application), acceptance/registration deposits (GBP 1,000-3,500, often non-refundable), uniform (GBP 600-1,200 per year), trips (GBP 800-3,500 per year depending on school and year), exam entries (modest at most schools, larger at IB schools), books and stationery (GBP 200-450), and music lessons or instrumental tuition where bundled (GBP 500-1,500).
Boarding fees
Several London-area independents accept full or weekly boarders. Boarding adds GBP 14,000-22,000 per year on top of day fees, though weekly boarding tends to be lower. Pure boarding schools outside central London (Eton, Harrow, Westminster. boarding option) sit at GBP 47,000-58,000 per year all-in including VAT.
Year-on-year fee inflation (excluding VAT effect)
Stripping out the VAT shock, underlying London independent school fee inflation runs about 5.5% per year. With VAT plus underlying inflation 2025-26 saw nominal increases of 12-18%. Looking forward, expect 5-6% annual inflation as VAT is fully absorbed.
International vs. independent: what fits
For UK-domiciled families and those expecting university destinations in the UK, the traditional independents remain the dominant choice and now face less effective competition from grammar schools given the recent quality drift in some grammar catchments. For globally mobile families with shorter time horizons (under 4 years) or those committed to IB Diploma rather than A-Level, the pure international schools (Southbank, ICS, ACS, ASL) offer better curriculum portability. ASL is particularly suited to American families given its US accreditation and university counselling.
Currency exposure for non-GBP earners
The pound has weakened against USD over the past two years, making London relatively cheaper for USD-paid families. EUR-paid families are roughly neutral. We recommend annual prepayment if your school offers a 2-3% discount and you are paid in GBP; termly payment if you carry currency risk.
Sibling discounts
Most London independents offer 5% off second siblings and 10% off third+. Some, including KCS and Highgate, offer no formal sibling discount. See our full sibling discount table for 2026 figures.
