International school term dates

Mexico City has a long-established international and bilingual school sector serving diplomatic, corporate and dual-national families. These schools run their own calendars, which broadly start in August like the SEP year but finish earlier:

  • American and IB schools run two semesters or three terms, opening in mid August and finishing in mid to late June, with a winter break around Christmas and a spring break in late March or April.
  • American schools add a Thanksgiving break in late November that the SEP calendar does not include.
  • British curriculum schools deliver three terms with half terms in October and February that the SEP year does not have.

Because international schools finish in June while SEP schools run to mid July, families with children in both systems should expect the summer start dates to diverge by several weeks. To understand each programme see our curriculum guides, and for national context our Mexico country hub.

Planning the year

Three practical notes for Mexico City families. First, the winter break is nearly three weeks around Christmas and New Year, the busiest domestic travel window in Mexico, so internal flights and coastal accommodation book up early. Second, the Semana Santa break in spring is the other major travel peak, with the city emptying as families head to the coast. Third, international school fee instalments usually fall at the start of each term or semester in August, January and the spring, so plan payment around those points. Our Mexico City international school fees guide sets out the tiers and timing.
