Term dates for Milan's state schools are set by the Lombardy region within the national framework, while international schools run their own year. Our Milan city guide covers the sector; this page sets out the 2026 dates. The headline breaks are Christmas, Easter and the distinctly Milanese Sant'Ambrogio bridge in early December.

Term dates 2025-26 and 2026-27

The table shows the Lombardy state-school calendar for 2025-26. Italian schools run a long continuous structure rather than fixed half-terms, broken mainly by Christmas, the short carnival pause and Easter. Milan follows the Ambrosian rite, so its carnival break falls a few days later than in most of Italy.

International school term dates

Milan's international schools follow a northern-hemisphere September to June or July year and differ from the Lombardy calendar mainly by adding an October half-term that Italian state schools do not take. British international schools such as the British School of Milan keep three terms with that October break, a two-week Christmas and a one-to-two-week Easter; American and IB schools run two semesters. The shared anchors with the local calendar are the Christmas fortnight, the Easter break in early April and the Sant'Ambrogio and Immaculate Conception bridge in December, which most schools in the city observe. Our curriculum guide explains how each system shapes the year.

Planning the year

Two practical notes for Milan families. First, the early-April Easter break and the Ferragosto summer peak are the busiest travel windows, and the December Sant'Ambrogio bridge fills the Alpine ski resorts within reach of the city, so book early. Second, line up your Milan international school fees against the term structure, as billing usually follows the terms. For the national framework, see our Italy country guide, and start a shortlist from the Milan city hub.
