The Milan school landscape
The flagship is International School of Milan (ISM), one of Italy's largest IB schools. Sir James Henderson British School is the heritage British school. American School of Milan (ASM) serves the US business community. British School of Milan (BSM) and Bilingual European School Milan round out the top tier alongside St Louis School and Andersen International.
Milan's international fees are notably more moderate than Rome and dramatically cheaper than London, Geneva or Zurich. Most premium expat packages with multinationals (Pirelli, UniCredit, Mediaset, Generali, Intesa) include education allowances of $25K-$35K per child.
Comparing Milan vs Rome for family relocation?
Milan is more corporate and Rome more diplomatic. Our guide compares both Italian markets head-to-head: schools, fees, lifestyle and family logistics.
Most popular neighbourhoods for families
San Siro / Lampugnano hosts ISM. Niguarda is home to Sir James Henderson. Noverasco / Opera hosts ASM in the southern Milan suburbs. Brera, Porta Nuova and Sempione appeal to families wanting central living. Lake Como (Como, Lecco) is a 30-60 minute commute and increasingly popular with executive families. For the western district with international schools on the doorstep, see our guide to living in San Siro with international schools. For modern central living by the gardens, see our guide to living in Porta Nuova with international schools.
