Term dates for Prague's state schools are set centrally by the Czech Ministry of Education, MSMT, while international schools layer their own calendar on top. Our Prague city guide covers the sector; this page sets out the 2026 dates. The fixed long breaks are Christmas and the summer holiday, supplemented by a short autumn break, the district-staggered spring break and Easter.

Prague public holidays 2026

Prague schools close on Czech national public holidays. The country observes thirteen statutory holidays, listed below for 2026.

Good FridayFriday 3 April
Easter MondayMonday 6 April
Labour DayFriday 1 May
Victory DayFriday 8 May

Czech Statehood DayMonday 28 September

St Stephen's DaySaturday 26 December

The early-July pair of Cyril and Methodius and Jan Hus Day falls inside the summer holiday, so it has little effect on the school calendar. The autumn cluster of Statehood Day, the 28 October state holiday and 17 November can each create a long weekend during term.

Term dates 2025-26 and 2026-27

The table shows the MSMT calendar for the 2025-26 school year. The Czech system runs two long teaching blocks, September to the Christmas break and January to the end of June, broken up by the short holidays below. There is no long February half-term in the UK sense, only a single district-rotated spring week.

The spring holiday week shown is for Prague 1 to 5. The outer Prague districts (6 to 10) are assigned to a different week in the six-week national rotation, so confirm your own district's date before booking. Individual schools can add their own headteacher days (reditelske volno). Confirm against your school's published calendar before booking travel.

International school term dates

Prague's international schools follow a northern-hemisphere September to June year but diverge from the Czech state calendar in a few ways. Most British and American international schools take a full October half-term week rather than the three-day Czech autumn break, a two-week Christmas holiday rather than the shorter state one, and a one-to-two-week spring break that does not follow the district rotation. IB and American schools run two semesters, with the IB Diploma exam season in May lengthening revision before the end of the year. The shared anchors with the local calendar are the Christmas fortnight and the Easter break in early April. If curriculum is still open, our curriculum guide explains how each system shapes the year and its assessment seasons.

Planning the year

Two practical notes for Prague families. First, the staggered spring break means central Prague and the outer districts can be off in different weeks, which is useful for off-peak ski trips to the Czech and Austrian mountains but awkward if you have children in schools in different districts, so check both calendars. Second, the long two-month summer is the prime travel window and flights from Prague fill early, so book by spring.
