How many American schools in Bahrain

Bahrain has four schools delivering a recognisable American curriculum, defined as Common Core or NGSS aligned with US high school diplomas and Advanced Placement at the senior years. The cluster is small in absolute terms but has grown faster than any other curriculum group since 2020, driven by the American School of Bahrain opening in Salmabad. The four schools serve roughly 4,500 pupils between them.

Demand is anchored by US Naval Forces Central Command at Naval Support Activity Bahrain in Juffair. NSA Bahrain supports an expat community of around 8,000 Americans across military, contractor and corporate roles, all of whom want the US transcript and Common Core alignment for clean mid-tour transfers back to Virginia, California or Texas. Beyond the military, Bahraini and Saudi families increasingly choose the US pathway for senior-year flexibility.

Accreditation and fees

Two accreditation bodies dominate the American school market in Bahrain. The New England Association of Schools and Colleges, NEASC, accredits the American School of Bahrain and is the gold standard for US international schools. The Middle States Association Commissions on Elementary and Secondary Schools, MSA-CESS, accredits Al Hekma International School. Both accreditations satisfy US Department of Defense Education Activity transferability requirements and are recognised by every US university.

Fees fall into two tiers. The premium tier covers the American School of Bahrain at BHD 6,000 to BHD 7,200, equivalent to USD 15,950 to USD 19,100, with the high school years at the top of that band. The mid tier covers Bahrain Bayan School at BHD 4,900 to BHD 5,800 and Al Hekma at BHD 4,100 to BHD 5,200. On top of tuition expect a 20 percent loading for capital levy, bus, books, AP exam fees and athletics participation. Our Bahrain fees guide works through the all-in cost picture. Illustrative example schools

The three schools below are illustrative rather than a ranking. Each holds recognised US accreditation and represents a distinct point in the Bahrain American schooling market.

American School of Bahrain in Salmabad is the flagship US-pathway school in the kingdom. Opened in 2020 by Esol Education, the campus is purpose-built for around 1,800 pupils. Curriculum is Common Core and NGSS aligned with AP Capstone in the senior years. The school holds NEASC accreditation and DODEA partner status for US military families.

Bahrain Bayan School in Isa Town is a bilingual Arabic-English school combining American AP with the IB Diploma in the senior years. Founded in 1982, it is the longest established US-pathway school in Bahrain and serves a heavily Bahraini cohort. Strong maths and science outcomes, with regular AP Scholar awards.

Al Hekma International School in Tubli is a smaller, family-run school delivering an American curriculum from kindergarten through grade 12 with MSA-CESS accreditation. The high school AP programme is narrower than ASB or Bayan but the school is widely regarded as a strong value option for families wanting the US pathway at a more accessible price point.

Where US families live

US-pathway families cluster around three areas. Juffair is the heart of the American community, adjacent to NSA Bahrain and home to the largest concentration of US military and contractor families. Most Juffair families take ASB via the school bus rather than the longer commute to Bayan. Adliya attracts US corporate families wanting central Manama lifestyle. Saar and Janabiyah draw the smaller cohort of executive families who prefer villa compounds over apartments.

The US community gathers around NSA Liberty Pool events, the American Mission Hospital and a strong Scouts presence at ASB. Our best areas guide covers neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood detail.

Admissions calendar

Applications for the August 2026 academic year opened at most American schools in January 2026, reflecting the US school calendar which starts a month earlier than the British or IB cycle. ASB closes its main admission window in late April for August start, with rolling admissions thereafter subject to space. Bayan and Al Hekma operate longer rolling cycles given they follow a partial Bahraini academic calendar starting in September.

The assessment process for grade entry typically involves Measures of Academic Progress, MAP testing, in reading and maths, plus a short writing sample. High school transfer applicants are asked for transcripts from the previous two years and any AP scores. ASB grade 9 entry is the most competitive bottleneck because cohort numbers are capped by laboratory and humanities seminar capacity. Our compare tool can put up to three schools side by side once you have a shortlist.
