How many British schools in Bahrain
Bahrain has around eight schools delivering a recognisable British curriculum from Early Years through to A-Level or IB Diploma. Four hold full British Schools Overseas accreditation: St Christopher's, BSB, Naseem and Nadeen. The remaining four are smaller primary providers, some BSO-pending and some adopting Cambridge International or Pearson Edexcel without the full BSO inspection.
By Gulf standards the cluster is small but quality-dense. The BSO-accredited cohort serves around 7,000 pupils, with St Christopher's and BSB accounting for roughly 4,000 between them. Long faculty tenures, a stable expat client base and the Bahrain-British Society give the cluster a continuity newer Gulf markets often lack. UK destinations are dominated by the Russell Group, with Imperial, Edinburgh, Bristol and Manchester featuring regularly.
BSO accreditation and fee tiers
The BSO inspection cycle is the clearest external signal of quality for British schools outside the UK. Penta International and Education Development Trust handle most Bahrain inspections, with all four BSO-accredited schools rated Good or Excellent in the most recent cycle. Reports are published every three years and are detailed enough to inform school selection.
Fees fall into three tiers. The premium tier covers St Christopher's and BSB senior years at BHD 6,500 to BHD 7,500, or USD 17,250 to USD 19,900. The mid tier covers Naseem and Nadeen plus smaller BSO-accredited providers at BHD 4,200 to BHD 5,800. Foundation Stage sits 25 to 30 percent below the senior year figure. The BQA caps fee increases tied to inspection rating. Our Bahrain fees guide covers the all-in picture.

St Christopher's School in Saar is the heritage British school in Bahrain, founded in 1961 by the British community. It is non-profit, has roughly 1,800 pupils and offers a dual sixth form with both A-Levels and the IB Diploma. The school sits at the top of the market for university destinations and is the default first choice for British families relocating to the kingdom.
The British School of Bahrain in Hamala opened in 1995 and is now part of the Inspired group. The Hamala campus, opened in 2016, is the most modern facility in the country at 2,200 pupils. BSB delivers the English national curriculum from Early Years through to A-Level, with the IB Diploma offered alongside.
Naseem International School in Hamala opened in 2009 and serves around 1,400 pupils. Strong Cambridge IGCSE outcomes, good co-curricular programme, and tuition that sits a meaningful step below the premium tier without sacrificing the BSO inspection standard.
Nadeen School in Saar is a smaller, independent primary specialist focused on the Foundation Stage through Year 6 years. The school is widely regarded as the strongest early years British provider in Bahrain and a natural feeder into St Christopher's senior school.
Where British families live
British families cluster around three areas. Saar is the heritage zone, with villa compounds around St Christopher's and Nadeen, plus the British Club. Janabiyah adjoins Saar and is the modern villa development of choice for newer arrivals. Hamala has become the natural BSB area, with several new villa compounds opened since 2018. Amwaj Islands attract families wanting the beach lifestyle, with a longer but manageable commute.
The British community in Bahrain is small at around 8,000 but dense, with strong networks through the British Embassy and the parents associations. Most families are on banking, energy or government contracts, typically three to five years. Admissions calendar
Applications for the September 2026 academic year opened at the four BSO-accredited schools between October and December 2025. St Christopher's main intake closes in mid February, with assessments and offers in March. BSB runs a slightly later cycle with applications accepted through to April subject to space. Naseem and Nadeen typically operate rolling admissions with shorter waiting lists. Foundation Stage 1, Year 3 and Year 7 are the natural entry points where multiple places open at once. Year 12 entry for A-Level is competitive because cohort numbers are small.
Mid-year transfers are accepted on a rolling basis subject to availability. Most movement happens between November and February as families resign before the summer rotation, and the assessment process is normally a one-hour English and maths paper plus a short interview. The school finder quiz can shortlist appropriate schools based on age, budget and timing.
