For the full picture of senior provision, start with our international schools in Bahrain directory, which lists every school by curriculum and stage. The schools below all run an examined Years 12 to 13 programme that leads directly to university entry, and they admit by application rather than by residential catchment. This is a shortlist to research, not a ranking, and provision changes, so confirm current pathways with each school.
If you are weighing the qualification itself, our guides to A Levels and the International Baccalaureate explain how each is examined and recognised by universities. Families can also browse the wider Bahrain secondary schools guide and, where a child needs extra help, our shortlist of the best schools for special educational needs in Bahrain.
The shortlist
St Christopher's School, Bahrain
St Christopher's, in Isa Town, has taught the British curriculum in Bahrain since 1961 and runs an unusually broad sixth form. It is the rare school in the Gulf to offer A Levels, the IB Diploma and BTEC under one roof, so a student can specialise through A Levels, take the breadth of the Diploma, or follow an applied BTEC route, all in the same setting. Entry to the sixth form is based on GCSE results, typically a minimum of five grades at 4 or above, with higher grades expected in chosen subjects.
The British School of Bahrain
The British School of Bahrain, in Hamala, has educated children for more than thirty years and is one of the country's strongest A Level providers, having reported the highest A Level results in Bahrain in recent years. Its sixth form pairs A Levels with BTEC for students who prefer an applied route, making it a natural first call for families who want a wholly British post-16 qualification. Note that its IB Diploma is delivered online through a partner rather than on campus, so confirm which pathway you want before applying.
Bahrain Bayan School
Bahrain Bayan School, established in 1982, is an independent bilingual school in Arabic and English and has been an IB World School since 1993. The IB Diploma forms the basis of nearly all classes in Grades 11 and 12, so it suits families who want a long-established, examined Diploma sixth form within a bilingual national setting rather than a wholly British route. As with any Diploma school, the subject combinations available depend on viable class sizes, so check the current offer.
How we chose
We included only Bahrain schools we could confirm run a genuine, externally examined sixth form leading to university entry, whether A Levels, BTEC or the IB Diploma, and that enrol students through to the final year. We did not rank them, score them or attach ratings, because the right sixth form depends on your child's subjects, the qualification universities in your target country prefer, and the fit of the school. Verify current subject lists and pathways directly, as schools add and retire options year to year, and confirm whether a Diploma is taught on campus or through a partner.

Start the school finderFees and next steps
Sixth form fees in Bahrain sit at the top of each school's scale, because the A Level and IB Diploma years carry examination entry costs on top of the highest tuition band. Fees differ between the long-established British schools and the bilingual national schools, and every school reviews its figures each year, so we do not quote a number here that would date quickly. Use our independent fee calculator to estimate the total cost of a place, including registration, deposit and extras, and confirm the exact sixth form tuition and examination charges with the school before you apply.
To build a shortlist around your child, use the school finder, browse the full Bahrain schools directory, or read the related British curriculum schools in Bahrain guide to see which schools carry the A Level pathway through to Year 13.
Common questions
St Christopher's School and the British School of Bahrain both teach A Levels in Years 12 and 13. St Christopher's also offers the IB Diploma and BTEC alongside A Levels, while the British School of Bahrain pairs A Levels with BTEC. Confirm the current subject list with each school, as options change year to year.
Bahrain Bayan School has run the IB Diploma as an IB World School since 1993, with the Diploma forming the basis of Grades 11 and 12. St Christopher's School also offers the IB Diploma as one of its three sixth form pathways. Check the live subject offer with each school before you apply.
British curriculum sixth forms typically ask for a minimum number of GCSE or IGCSE passes at grade 4 or above, with higher grades in the subjects a student wishes to continue. St Christopher's, for example, sets a baseline of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above. Each school sets its own bar, so confirm the requirement for your child's intended subjects.
Neither is universally better. The IB Diploma is broad, with six subjects plus its core, while A Levels let a student specialise in three or four. Universities in the UK, the US, the Gulf and beyond accept both, so the better choice depends on your child's strengths and target countries. Our curriculum guides compare them in detail.
Sixth form sits at the top of each school's fee scale, with the Diploma and A Level years the most expensive. Fees vary by school and are reviewed annually, so rather than quote a figure that dates quickly, confirm the current sixth form tuition, examination entry and any deposit directly with the school before you apply.
