How many bilingual schools in Bahrain

Bahrain has around six bilingual Arabic-English schools serving roughly 7,500 pupils between them. The cluster is unusually deep for a Gulf state of this size, reflecting an older Bahraini upper middle class that has chosen bilingual private education since the 1980s. The two flagships are Ibn Khuldoon National School in Riffa, founded in 1983, and Bahrain Bayan School in Isa Town, founded in 1982. Both serve over 1,500 pupils and operate the full kindergarten through grade 12 pathway. Al Bayan Bilingual School in Adliya and several primary-only providers complete the picture.

The cluster sits between the premium English-medium internationals and the Arabic-medium private schools. Pupil mix is heavily Bahraini, typically 75 to 85 percent of any cohort, with the remainder split between expat families wanting genuine Arabic exposure and regional GCC families. The result is a community that feels Bahraini in the corridors but uses English as the dominant language of academic instruction from middle school onwards.

Language split and pathways

The language split at a bilingual Bahrain school is typically 60 percent English and 40 percent Arabic by teaching hours in the early years, shifting to 70 to 80 percent English by the senior years. Arabic language, Islamic studies and Bahraini social studies remain compulsory in Arabic throughout the programme, regardless of nationality, which reflects Ministry of Education requirements for licensed private schools in the kingdom. English is used for maths, science, humanities at the senior level, technology and the arts.

Senior school pathways diverge. IKNS runs the IB Diploma plus a US high school diploma, with around 60 percent of leavers heading to American or Canadian universities and 25 percent to the UK. Bahrain Bayan School runs an American AP programme alongside the IB Diploma, with similar university outcomes. The smaller bilingual providers feed pupils into IKNS or Bayan for the senior years, or into the British and American international schools. The Bahrain BQA inspects all bilingual schools annually, with IKNS and Bayan both rated Outstanding in the most recent cycle. Our Bahrain fees guide covers the all-in cost picture for the bilingual tier.

Illustrative example schools

The three schools below are illustrative rather than a ranking. Each represents a distinct point in the Bahrain bilingual market.

Ibn Khuldoon National School in Riffa, founded in 1983, is the longest established bilingual IB school in Bahrain. The school serves around 1,800 pupils and posts strong IB Diploma cohort averages above 35 points. Dual diploma route, strong Arabic literature programme, long Bahraini Cambridge and Oxford alumni roster.

Bahrain Bayan School in Isa Town, founded in 1982, runs a bilingual American AP programme alongside the IB Diploma. Multiple AP Scholar awards. The strongest bilingual option for families targeting US universities, particularly strong in maths, science and robotics.

Al Bayan Bilingual School in Adliya is a smaller primary and middle school feeder that sends pupils into IKNS, Bayan or the English-medium internationals at grade 9. Natural choice for central Manama families on smaller budgets.

Where bilingual families live

Bilingual school families cluster in three areas. Riffa is the heart of the zone, with IKNS at its centre and Bahraini upper middle class villas in Riffa Views and Riffa Golf. Isa Town adjoins and is the natural Bayan area, with villa compounds and a strong Bahraini community. Adliya attracts mixed Bahraini-expat couples who want the central lifestyle in apartments rather than villas.

For expat families, the trade-off is more Arabic exposure and a Bahraini-led peer group against a less internationally mobile transcript. Our bilingual curriculum hub covers the framework, and the best areas guide walks through neighbourhood pros and cons.

Admissions calendar

Applications for September 2026 opened at IKNS and Bayan in November 2025, with main intake assessments running January through March. KG1 is the tightest bottleneck because Bahraini sibling preference is strong and waiting lists for the larger schools run two to three years for non-Bahraini families. Mid-year transfers into KG2 through grade 8 are accepted on a rolling basis. Grade 9 is the second-largest intake, with a maths and English assessment plus a short Arabic placement test.

Older applicants sit a one-hour English plus maths paper, an Arabic literacy assessment and a short interview. Offer letters issue in April and May. For families relocating to Bahrain wanting a bilingual school, apply at least 12 months ahead. The school finder quiz can shortlist schools by age, budget and language background.
