How many American schools in Barcelona
Barcelona has five schools delivering an American style high school programme that ends with a US diploma and AP transcript. Three of those, the American School of Barcelona, Benjamin Franklin International School and Hamelin Laie International, are accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools or by WASC, which are the two standard US regional accreditors used outside North America. The other two use Cognia accreditation, which is widely accepted by US universities but is sometimes less familiar to UK and European admissions offices.
The cluster is small but settled. Most American programmes in Barcelona have run their current diploma format for at least 15 years, and the school counsellors maintain working relationships with admissions officers at every major US university. Cohort sizes at grades 11 and 12 sit between 30 and 90, which is smaller than American international schools in Madrid or London but allows the personalised university counselling US families typically expect.
What the US diploma looks like in Barcelona
The American high school diploma at Barcelona schools follows the standard four year structure of grades 9 to 12, with a transcript of letter grades, a cumulative GPA and a slate of AP courses chosen by the student. AP offerings range from around 10 subjects at the smaller schools to 18 or more at the American School of Barcelona and Benjamin Franklin. SAT and ACT preparation runs alongside the regular academic timetable, and most schools host the SAT and the AP exam sessions on site.
Three of the five American schools in Barcelona also offer the IB Diploma as a parallel option in grade 11 and 12. That dual track is unusual in Spain and gives students the choice to switch into a Diploma at the start of grade 11 if their university targets shift toward the UK, Canada or continental Europe.

Where American families live in Barcelona
American families in Barcelona cluster around three areas. Esplugues, Sant Just Desvern and Pedralbes dominate, anchored by the American School of Barcelona and the Benjamin Franklin Sarrià campus. Detached housing here is at a premium but the school run is short and the wider American community is concentrated. Sant Cugat del Vallés works well for families happy to use the school bus or commute by train, with a similar suburban profile to American family enclaves in Madrid or Frankfurt. Sitges and the southern coast attract families at the European International School and Hamelin Laie, with beachfront living balanced against a longer city commute.
Newly arrived American families in Barcelona often start in serviced apartments in the Eixample or near the Diagonal before committing to a longer term lease in their school’s catchment. Sant Cugat and Esplugues offer the deepest pool of family sized detached housing.
