How many IB schools in Barcelona
Barcelona currently lists 14 authorised IB World Schools with the International Baccalaureate Organization. That makes it the second largest IB cluster in Spain after Madrid, and the largest in Catalonia by a wide margin. The mix is unusual: roughly half of the cohort are private international schools, the other half are Spanish escuelas concertadas that added an IB Diploma pathway in the last decade.
About nine of those 14 schools offer the full IB Diploma at Bachillerato age, the rest run PYP and MYP only, transitioning their senior cohorts into the Spanish Bachillerato or the British A Level. Families seeking a continuous IB pathway from age 3 to 18 should focus on Benjamin Franklin International School, Oak House, Saint Peter’s, Aula and BFIS Sant Cugat, all of which run dual or triple programme authorisations.
Cohort sizes are small by international standards. Most Barcelona IB Diploma cohorts sit between 35 and 70 students per Year 12, which means subject choice is narrower than in Singapore or Dubai, but pastoral attention is noticeably stronger and the staff know every Diploma candidate by name.
Fees and the Barcelona IB tiers
IB tuition in Barcelona is grouped into three rough tiers. The value tier, running from EUR 9,500 to EUR 13,000 per year for secondary, covers the concertado IB schools and the lower secondary years at some private campuses. The mid tier sits at EUR 13,000 to EUR 18,000 and captures most of the established names including Oak House, Aula and BFIS Sant Cugat. The premium tier, EUR 18,000 to EUR 24,000, is Benjamin Franklin International School and the senior years at Saint Peter’s and the American School of Barcelona.
Published tuition is not the all in cost. Most Barcelona international schools charge a non refundable matricula of EUR 1,500 to EUR 3,500 in the first year, a quarterly capital fee, a compulsory school bus contract that runs EUR 1,400 to EUR 1,900 a year, and IB Diploma examination fees that add EUR 800 to EUR 1,100 in Year 12. Our Barcelona fees guide shows the loading school by school, so you can compare like for like rather than headline tuition.

Illustrative example schools
The five schools below are illustrative, not a ranking. Each has a multi year IB record, a clear identity in the Barcelona market and Diploma scores published consistently.
Benjamin Franklin International School in Sarrià runs the full PYP, MYP and Diploma Programme, with Diploma cohorts that have averaged above 33 points for several years. American style culture, English first language of instruction throughout, strong record into US and UK universities.
Oak House School in Sarrià is a long established Catalan family school that added IB MYP and DP to its Bachillerato pathway. Trilingual environment in Catalan, Spanish and English, with the IB Diploma offered alongside the Spanish Bachillerato as a senior alternative.
Saint Peter’s School in Pedralbes is a smaller IB Continuum World School, fully bilingual in English and Spanish from primary, with Catalan as a strong third language. Cohorts are small but Diploma results are reliably strong.
BFIS Sant Cugat is the sister campus to Benjamin Franklin, in the leafy Sant Cugat valley, serving families who want suburban housing and a 30 minute train into the city. The PYP and MYP are well established; the Diploma cohort is smaller but stable.
Aula Escola Europea in Pedralbes is a respected Catalan school that built its IB Diploma alongside the Spanish Bachillerato, popular with bicultural families who want both qualifications.
Where IB families live
IB families in Barcelona cluster around four areas. Sarrià and Sant Gervasi dominate the international IB world thanks to the proximity of Benjamin Franklin, Oak House and Saint Peter’s. Housing here is a mix of pre war apartments and 1970s family blocks with parking, at a clear premium over the rest of the city. Pedralbes and the upper Bonanova area are the quieter, leafier alternative, popular with families relocating from London or Frankfurt who want garden space and a short school run. Sant Cugat del Vallés, 25 minutes north by train, is the suburban choice for families happy to trade city living for a detached house, a school within walking distance and a noticeably calmer pace. Esplugues and Sant Just Desvern, between the city and Sant Cugat, serve families at the American School of Barcelona and a few of the smaller IB primaries.
British and American families with IB intentions tend to settle in Sarrià and Sant Cugat. French and Italian families with IB plans more often pick Pedralbes or the Diagonal Mar district near the international French Lycée satellites.
Admissions calendar
Applications for the September 2026 academic year opened in most Barcelona IB schools between October and December 2025. Tier 1 schools close their main intake for Year 7 and Year 12 by late February. The Catalan public schools and concertados follow a separate preinscripció window each March, but for the private IB schools, the timetable is school by school and tends to run earlier than the Catalan calendar. Late applicants are placed on a waiting list and offered places only as withdrawals come through, typically May to August.
For families relocating mid year, January starts are accepted on a rolling basis at most schools subject to availability, with most movement happening between November and February. Diploma Programme transfers after October of Year 12 are difficult because subject choices and internal assessments are already underway.
